Hi All!

New to the forum, but not to Erie.  I've got a quick question about walleye fishing.  If the lake lays down this time of year, is it too late to head out of Walnut to the trenches for walleye?  I usually watch the forum for walleye moving in from Ohio, but don't know how late is too late to get them in the fall.  If it's going to be slim pickings, I'll probably be one of those annoying boats parading in front of walnut.

Thanks,

Doug

    Welcome to the boards!

After a big blow like this the fish are usually more scattered, but they are there. The schools of eyes didn't really show up this year like in the past, but the perch fishing has remained strong. Forecast looks like maybe Saturday afternoon is supposed to lay down, but I wouldn't count on it. Hopefully a few nice days in the next couple of weeks. Good luck!

You'll also stand a good chance of picking up some steelhead action now too, not much for eating but they are fun to catch.

    Welcome!

If you can get your offerings past the hords of steelhead, you might hook a few eyes....its been a great late bite.  The numbers have certainly been dwindling in the past few weeks though.  Out of the Nut, the bite has been best toward the PA/OH line...Good luck regardless.

Just like bulldog and SHutup said...They are out there, just depends on the bait your gonna use...Spoons (Stingers or whatever) Are gonna get you eyes, steelies and "some" Junk.....Crawler harnesses are gonna get you eyes, maybe a steely or two and a lot of junk....I am hearing now that the best success is with stick baits ( Reef Runners, Rapala's, Bomber's, Bagley's etc) Ran behind dipsies or weighted off of planers are really working well and not catching any junk....My buddy got 30 Just last week using this method in 72FOW (Out of Conny though) Good luck too ya...with the hard blow we just had, it cooled the lake off a few degrees so it will be interesting to see if they have moved shallower to find warmer water or ???? Could be just sitting higher up in the TC....

Thanks everyone!  You know how to make a newcomer feel welcome.  Nothing against Steelhead, but walleye are my eating fish.  I've got downriggers and dipseys, so I'll try some plugs and spoons off of them.  Last trip up in August I managed a few on harnesses, but also a lot of junk.  It wasn't till I went to spoons that I started catching the 'eyes.  I have a hard time trying to figure out where to run the riggers because I see a lot of perch on the screen, but not many marks that I think are 'eyes.  I tried anywhere from 40 to 65' on the riggers and caught them at all depths.  I guess they're not relating to the thermocline as much as I thought.

Big water, don't neglect the inshore fishing for eyes. there's usually quite a gew just outside the trib mouths in about 35 FOW following the steel. Later they will be in about 15 FOW.
