emeralds verses goldens

I know what emerald shiners are but what are goldens?  We bought bait last weekend and they looked like fatheads to me.  Are those considered goldens?

The Goldens from Conneaut actually come from Arkansas. Fatheads are fatheads. No mistaking them.

Goldens that you buy in a bait shop are pretty similar in appearance to emeralds.  If what you had looked like fatheads, they were likely fathead.

I actually usually prefer the goldens to emeralds for steelhead fishing, especially when the steelhead tend to feed more aggressively in warmer water.  They are much hardier and lively.

I have used both emeralds and fatheads and both have worked for me.  I agree the fatheads are hardier and last longer.

I never fished either? How do you guys hook them? What size hook? I saw people fishing them last year and it didn't look like any one was stringing them like some poeple do.

    Rollcaster,

It depends on conditions. Low and clear, I'll use an 18 or 20. If the water has some color, I'll go as big as 14 sometimes. Either way though, I just hook 'em through the lips. I prefer a little bigger hook when I can get away with it. Seem to get better hookups that way.

In deeper runs, I'll drift them under a float with a little bit of shot just like an egg or any other bait. In fast runs when I can see the fish, I'll often lose the float, adjust the shot and try to watch 'em take it.

Never used fatheads in Erie, but shiners are by far my favorite bait for steelhead. I'd imagine the fatheads work just as well though. I've just always used shiners.

rsquared, Thanks I'll have to try it. I saw people doing really well on them last year early in the season.

rsquared gave you some very good info.  I usually use a #14 nymph hook most of the time and hook them between their belly and tail so they hang head down.  If you don't hit any vital organs they will still swim around for awhile.

Most all Golden Shiners purchased from this area are certified to free of VHS disease and can be used in NY. If fishing in NY be sure to get a slip from the bait shop. We were told that if using fatheads for perch fishing you need to smash them to get the perch to bite. Sorry guys, no room left in the box for a meat hammer. I'll stick to goldens or emeralds.
