Spinning Reel on Fly Rod

I looked through all of the "steelhead basics" threads and did not see this covered. In July I bought my first fly rod (5wt). I see that people generally tend to shy away from using a 5wt for steel, especially if you are a noob like me. Seeing that the drag systems on my spinning reels are more smooth/efficient than my fly reel, would it take a good amount of stress off of the 5wt allowing me to fight the fish better if I put one on my fly rod? The reason I ask is because my fly rod (9ft) is the longest in my collection, and would allow for a better drift than my 6.5' bass rod.

Go for it......I'd reccomend attaching the reel farther forward on the handle with some small hose clamps, though....alot easier to use that way. Other than that and a few odd looks, you'll do just fine. Of course PR's sells cheap noodles for under $30, so that's a good option too.

You can use duct tape or electricians tape for a smoother connection than the hose. I know a guy who has used a spinning reel/fly rod combo with great success for years! Tight lines!

    fly reel on noodle rod

My thoughts/concerns  on going spin reel on flyrod would be the metal wire guide loops instead of ceramic guides all the way down

I wonder how tough the metal guide loops would be on mono when playing fish?

by your logic a 10wt reel on your 5wt would be suitable for salt....

use your 5wt reel and 5wt rod or use a spinning setup
you won't change your rod by putting a different reel on

Back in the day before noodle rods were widely available, putting a spinning reel on a fly rod was a fairly common thing.   I have never tried this, but would tend to think that putting the reel up on the handle would make fighting the fish easier.  Black electrical tape should get the job done.  A couple of large zip ties would not be a bad idea either.

They work ok, I've used mine that way when I need futher casting distance on bigger water. Its hard to flip a egg sack 30 feet with a flyrod, at least for me. So I always carry a spinning reel in my vest and if I want to float a sack or minni foo jig and need the xtra  casting distance. (ex. Mud hole on Elk)
In cold weather the metal guides do hold more ice, but its doable for sure.
I'd go with a 6wt, but thats just me....

I did this a copy of years ago for a day and it worked but the guides are small and it does not cast very well.  The best choice is to go and buy a Cortalnd Noodle rod.  They come with a lifetime warrenty and can be had for $69.00.  Best buy I ever made.

it would look more inconspicuous with the reel under the casting rod but if you're going to put a spinning reel on the casting rod you might as well go all the way and keep the spinning reel up. it just gives that added effect............

    its just silly...

there are reasons the flyrod's guides and line are different and the reel is where it is.  if you wanna spin-cast, your doing yourself disservice without the proper rod.

if you really want a challenge, go out and get the shortest ultralight rod you can find with the smallest spinning reel imaginable, load it up with 4lb trielene and go catch a steelie with that... heh

    now THATS fishin!

Use some electric tape and tape the reel on to the handle to you have a rod butt. If not theres great noodle rods down at the "dobins landing" in Erie for 20$. And i snapped a brand new 5wt. the other day fighting a steelhead so i highly would suggest stonger. Plus you might p!ss off all the other anglers in the hole using that rod because that will make for a longer fight

Thanks for the responses/ideas....looks like it would be less of a hassel to just shell out the $30 for a cheap noodle rod.

Anadromous-Where can the $24 Eagle Claw be had? Walmart? PR's? I have to get off 79 at 6N to get to my buddies camp, so Walmart would be very conveinient.

Poor Richards sells Sil-Star noodles (or used to)
I won two of them and gave away one to a kid in need.
Never used the other one, but a friend I trust to know what he's talking about,  tells me they're a pretty decent rod

Hi Larry, I used my spin reel on my fly rod for years, never had a problem, I switch up to it when I work my way out to the lake and throw spoons with it, I don't like to carry two rods, 1 rod two reels works for me, at my age I tend to forget things, old Dude.

thats a good fish, they are all good, some are gooder than others
