"One Fly" update

Gentlemen,  annnnd Deetz,
Just a little note to let people know that the "One Fly" will be held no matter what the conditions.  There's always the lake fronts.
Now for the exciting news.  I am thunking about upgrading the 1st prize if anybody would want it.  I am thinking about making 1st place overall a certificate for a Brand New bamboo flyrod (made by me) in the winners' choice of weight and wrap color (From existing availablity in my stocks).  The rod will be one of my standard builds but with a few upgrades.  (No I won't do nickle silver fittings and a stone stripper) but it will have a wooden reel seat, heavy duty ferrules and good to v.good cork.
Or does everybody just prefer the antique rod for first.  If I do the new rod for 1st the antique will move to 2d place prize.  You can comment here or pm me.

I think the new one would make an excellent 1st prize. That being said, I won't get near winning either one of them.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

Indy that would be great but I don't think you need to go overboard on your end, but it is up to you but remember this is a fun & social event & a gathering of fellow fly fishers, just my 2 cents

Biggest prize I'm hoping for is to actually catch a fish. Even a goby.

That said, the notion of noo boo would make any fly fisher salivate.

Yes, good point - my first steel of the year would be prize enough for me!

i think if someone wins by a goby this year you can make them a custom made 2wt. goby rod.......

If we dont get more rain, my One Fly strategy might be to leave the eggs at home, bring the zonkers and foam bugs and hit the bay for bass. Load up on 1/4 points!

Dt I do happen to have a nice litttle 46" section of rod that would make a great 1wt.  Just downscale everything and it could be done;  Might make it up for the "One Fly" if i can get the $1,000 rod I'm working on done.  That's right; gentle readers:  $1,000.  The materials alone were over $650.  When you get into this kind of money you get really particular.

Before everyone gets too excited; the big money rod is NOT going to be the 1st place rod.

Sounds awesome indy, do you have a website if we were interested in a rod? What would the available lengths and weights be? Im sure others are wondering besides me. Maybe that would be a little extra motivation to catch a few more gobies.

Indy , I dont get it , maybe I read it wrong or maybe Im just that dense. Is there some reason I was singled out there? and why? Just fill me in, so I can get it through my thick skull.

I would go for the new rod...

but 'm not on the list of competitors

Guess I'll just come and watch/hope someone does not show up.

    Deetz,
In one of my earlier posts (referenced by Tim) you said you weren't a gentleman, and I replied OK but it's too time consuming to type:  Gentlemen, annnd Deetz, everytime.  I wanted to see who would remember the post.

    HC Steel,
Since I am almost totally computer inept, (what else can you expect of someone who builds rods the way they did 120 years ago), I am waiting on my son (the computer guru) to get my web page up and running.  And since I actually hate to advertise anything in case prices change.  All I can tell you is that as of right now I can get the materials to build rods from 6.5 feet to  9.5 feet ranging from 2 wt to 7 wt (it's a tree trunk).  And I can get accessories ranging from cheap to "Don't touch that".
Building a bamboo rod is a lot like buying a Chevy pick-up.  Nothing's cheap but you can really get expensive if you want to.  Examples:  blanks from 75 to 600 dollars, reel seats from 15 to 100, guides from 16 to 60, cork from 7 to 40,  stripping guides from 3 to 125, ferrules from 10 to 120.  silk or nylon, single color or multiple, tipping or none.  And the labor that goes into making the rod up.  Actually the labor is almost the same whether it is a cheap rod or an expensive rod.  The only factor there is the # of guides and the changes of thread (takes more time)  I am in the precess of building a rod with 11 guides and a hook holder in two colors of thread.  It's being done with two coats of spar varnish (never really dries) and two of poly for protection. SO if you went dead cheap.  Materials would run from about 163 dollars (an estimate); to about 1100 ( an estimate)  and when you add in 30-60 hours labor to do things by hand.  They ain't cheap.  But they are fun and a connection with the "past" as it were.  Re-finishing a rod eliminates the cost of the blank, and maybe the reel seat and the ferrules so the only thing you really have is the labor and about 25 dollars for thread and glue.  But there again, if a repair needs a tip, or a ferrule, or new cork, or a new reel seat, or you want to change what you have the cost is appropriate.
I tend to get long winded but I hope that answers your question.

I am getting pretty excited for the One Fly, and it has very little to do with the prizes.  Can't wait!

That completely answered my question and you go as low as I was hoping you were. A 7 foot 2 weight would be sweet for brookies and bluegills. I hope I win but that isnt looking too likely.
