Steelhead Sampler

I've been slowly building up an assortment of steelhead flies for a friend who needs a good selection to start out with. Take a look at what I've got for him so far and tell me what you think. The remaining space on the left side I plan to fill with a half-dozen woven buggers or maybe a few zonkers.

Definately will be a good start! Throw in a few nymphs and it will be real nice. Good job Cold. Like the 6 flies above the buggers.

looks good.  i don't like the black though, i just think why waste hooks and box space on black when you can put some perfectly good pink or white in there.
maybe others have had success on black, i never have though

Hey there Cold - Looks good to me. In fact it kind of looks exactly like the box I'm putting together for a Marine who served in Iraq who I hope to be able to bring up the end of Oct. (if we ever get any rain!). He never fished for steel before so I thought I'd help him out. Like Norm said the only difference is that I threw in some Hex nymphs. Good job there buddy!

The lazer flies look good. I don't have any material for them. I have never tied black SS. Anybody have luck with it? I do have black yarn. Maybe I'll tie some.

You really should throw some nymphs in there. A flahback PT, a black stone, and a caddis. 3 basic easy to tie patterns that will produce every time out.

    Thanks guys.

About the nymphs: he's already a trout fisherman, and said he already has a good selection of standard trout nymphs.

As far as black SS, basically, it's something the fish rarely see, so I figured I'd include it. Its probably one of those situational things where if you use it at the wrong time it'll be totally ignored, but in the right conditions (probably early morning/late evening, murky water) it'll be like steelhead crack.

I'm thinking about maybe throwing in a few more color combos for those laser flies too.

Nice flies! I would definitely do some zonkers. They always work well for me.

Looks good so far man.  I agree with putting some high producing nymphs for steelhead in there, even if he is a trout fisherman.

    Cold,
It's kinda hard to tell in your pics but you may want to consider seperating the yarn for your SS patterns.
Sparse flies will produce better nine out of ten times over bulky,spilling-over flies.

    Good job.
