Mccoy Dam Removal

They finally started removing the dam on monday. Man they are moving fast, i expect to see it completely gone next week! I am a little concerned though. I drive by it every morning and up untill this morning everything looked like it was going well. The slack stagnant water is moving BIG TIME and they have all the water diverted to one side of the dam. Well this morning i looked and the lower sections within say 500 yards of the dam were all but dried up! I really wonder how much this is going to reduce the width of the stream. Now of course, above tallyrand is not in danger because the dam there regulates the water. Im begining to think we may see a reduction in the width of the stream below that anywhere from 5->15ft. Im going to take some pictures tonight, ill put them up when I get back.

I fished behind the waste treatment plan today and although I was about a mile or so upstream, the water seemed to be the same as what it was a couple weeks ago.

Partially because it was dangerous, guys were taking kayaks over it. Also they claim it will help with flood control. But the main reason was so that fish can migrate back up stream to spawn. Which begs the question, why dont they put a fish ladder in at tallyrand or tear it out also.

They arent done yet. It looks like the section above it will improve. That water was virtually unfishable. Below it, from what i see, in the first 100 or so yards it may be a little smaller. They are planning to make it into a recreation area from what I hear. The stream has been murky from the dam till it meets bald eagle ever since they started. Actually looks like it may be good to fish. Last time I fished was...uh.... 3 weeks ago?

Took more pictures this morning on my way to work, will stop and take a couple more this evening. Its about gone. And yes now above the dam has been extreamly effected. The stream is reducing in size every day. Id say for 200->300yards above the dam, the stream is about 8 ft wide now, not 50. The amount of sediment they have moved is unreal. I think i read in the cdt that the **** was 16ft tall, well it looked to be about 6 ft deep before the dam was removed. 10ft of SLUDGE. I think its going to definately be an improvement.

Sorry i havent put the other pics up yet, too busy. I did notice on my way through this morning they had an excavator above the dam making the stream wider again, not as wide as before but not 4 ft wide eaither.

I really hope the bring some structure in. Theres ZERO rocks, trees... anything in the water for the fish to use as cover.
