I need everyones help on a project that I'm working on. What I need is the working height of your vise (from table to jaw of vise). The reason that I'm asking this is b/c I'm making some tying stations and I want to intergrate a vise into the mix. I'm going to be makeing a couple different styles (To hold your vise ). Everyones input is welcome and if anyone would like to share with me what they look for in tying stations or desks it will just help improve the product. Thanks for everyones help on this.

Clamp vises, in my case a regal medalion, adjust up or down with a shaft screw,  height of the jaws from the table vary with tying techniques. Height I prefer is 6 to 10", height determined by whether or not I want the jaws to rotate.

Thanks for the input so far its a big help, What I'm trying to get is a base height to start being that I can't lower the vise in the station being the main base will be granite and all I can do is go up,

If you can, either just bolt on some kind of metal flange with a set screw adjustment on a 3/8" hole OR build the flange into the granite, but you'd have to start out with a thicker piece and work down. Also dont know how the set screw would work in the granite.

Really, I'd just check out a few pedestal vises if I were you and imitate them. The height is more a function of each individual vise. All pedestal models start out at bench height +/- 0" and go up from there. The only difference the pedestal makes in height is how deep the hole goes. A thru hole will let the shaft drop as low as it can, but a blind hole might be a bit stronger, and more aesthetically pleasing.

I'll try to give you all an idea of what I'm trying to do with this. Picture an roll top desk for example with the working surface made out of granite. What my idea is to make the shaft to the vise fixed to the table so it wont move and make the jaws to the vise adjustable with all tying angles in mind. Granted this will be custom set to fit the tyer and I'm also makeing a smaller version that you can set on any desk or table with intergrated vises and clamp on vices to fit all tyers.

I like versatility in my tying area. Everything is portable and can be rearranged to suit the season or type of flies I'm tying.
Right now, I'm still working on tiny dries so the 6 removable drawers to the left contain materials dedicated to those type of flies.

Agreed. If you have a pedestal vise you can move it anywhere on the bench to make it comfortable. Storage on the other hand is important. One thing that drives me nuts is to have to dig through a drawer full of stuff to find the one thing that I want.
