Wading Jacket or Chest/hip pack?

I dont like wearing a vest all the time for steelhead. I dont know what it is but it feels like im restrained with a vest on. I am thinking of getting a wading jacket that would hold my nippers fly boxes and tippet spools or maybe even a chest or waist pack for this fall and winter. It seems like most of the good steelhead fishing is when it is during a blizzard so Im wearing a waterproof jacket anyways. I really liked the Patagonia SST jacket but its out the league of a 17 year old. Any suggestions? I saw the Reddington jacket that looks good.

    I think you're lying dru

I found a Patagonia deep wading jacket on sale--worth the money

hip packs.......I have been using a Pacific Outdoors Ballard  for over a year now........very good....but, it is only waterproof when you close the zipper.......HA HA   it holds 3-4 fly boxes, shots, dry fly powder, tippets and I put my camera in the front pocket.......

    Dru,

Knowing your destructive nature is it junk because you managed to break something on it like everything else you own/borrow?

Wading jackets are nice, but even in the winter, with the walking I do for steelies, they just get too warm to wear every single trip. I carry a creel and put all my fishing stuff in that...granted I do get some funny looks when fishing in C&R areas.

i wear a wading jacket most months of the year.... and love it

if its cold enough for waders... its cold enough for the jacket
if i'm wet wading cold water, the jacket keeps me warm
it is also layered Gore-Tex Pro with nice venting options

i don't like vest, fanny packs, or chest packs

if i don't wear the jacket... i use my shorts pockets... tippet, floatant, box, maybe an extra leader

i know you do repairs dude.  i have been forced to send rods back to st croix in wisconsin because that has been the only way for me to get one of their rods fixed.

edit:  i'm also just curious as to why my message above about the redington has been edited by other means other than myself?

i rock the jacket pretty much year round as well. I have an ll bean that i bought a year or so ago that has held up well.  Its light, but if its cold, I just layer.  I wore it through a blizzard in erie on december 29th or so and it held up fine.

I bought a Simms last year on closeout at Cabela's $80.00. Good looking jacket, but for being originally priced at 160.00 I thought it would be better quality wise. It's junk, learned my lesson on buying for the sake of the name on the tag. I like my vest, probably because thats what i've been using for the past 15 years and it's comfortable. wear the jacket for looks.

I second the vote for the LLBean. for the $, it's tough to beat. And they back it up w/ a satisfaction gaurantee.
not as loaded with features as some others, but maybe that's a good thing.

Simms makes the best jackets and waders out of any distributor.  You just need to actually spend the money and buy the stuff with gore tex made in America.  160 for a wading jacket isn't gonna cut it.

$160 isn't gonna cut it? Mine was $80. I stay dry, my sleeves stay dry, it has big pockets and room for a lot, and it hasn't ripped. The kid's 17. what do you expect him to pay for a jacket?

Depends on what you want to do with it.  Fishing over 100 days a year I couldn't see an 80 dollar jacket lasting me for more than 30 of those trips.

I don't expect him to pay anything, Im just a simms guy and I believe the old addage goes, you get what you pay for?

my guess is you got the "invest" or "freesone" jacket, which are rainshells.... not a wading jacket

On Sierra the Patagonia SST is about 200$. Is that the best that you can get? I like how some of the Fishpond chespacks are but they are about 120$. It seems to me that the jacket would be alot more versatile for an Erie steelhead fisherman. I will be getting out alot and I do fish in the nasty stuff.

I don't know your location... but if you're anywhere near Indiana County... Indiana Angler has some nice wading jackets and fishpond packs at great prices.. owners name is Woody... great guy.

i don't know what you consider a "wading jacket", but you can certainly buy a waterproof jacket, that's warm and has ample pocket room for 100 or under

granted it won't be simms or orvis

What do you own?  Gloves and a hat?  Iv'e owned a lot of "good" gear that lasts me one fishing season, William and Joseph for one....ruined everything in one year. Nothing has been better to me than Simms.  In posting stuff about Simms iv'e noticed before people seem to get roused because they can't justify paying so much money for it or cant afford it. I can and in my personal opinion....it lasts, is quality, and has the best service out of any wader I have ever owned so I will attest to them being the best.

What company do u think is just as good as Simms?  Just wondering.....

Simms is good stuff, no doubt about it, but they are not immune to problems, either. and it's hard to explain the price tag on some of their stuff. i think you can find good stuff that works as well and fits a budget, it just takes more legwork and trial and error. Although a $600 G4 (or G5, or whatever) with 10 layers of gore-tex and a built in ball tickler sounds nice, too.
