Wading Belt

What exactly is the purpose of a wading belt? My waders didn't come with one, and I've never used one, but it seems like some kind of safety precaution, and if it'd keep me safer while wading bigger, faster water, I dont want to miss out. I'm not sure if belt-equipped waders have belt loops or something built in, or if they just clip on over the waders. I was thinking about this last week and then over the weekend my girlfriend's family had a big garage sale. I saw a big wide military style belt made of nylon webbing (like the wading belts I've seen), and her mom just gave it to me. Would this work as a wading belt?

the main idea is to keep your waders from filling if you take a digger...

but it helps with comfort too

I have a fanny-pack that has slots for two bottles of water and a zipper pack. It snugs the midsection of my waders up and, I guess, would slow down the amount of water that floods in should I take a tumble. Makes me look like I've got a blimp up my butt though as my only waders are neoprene bootfoot.

I've been wearing them all summer (which may not be the most comfortable). HotHotHot days I'll wet wade. I am seriously considering a lighter sock-foot style with better shoes. I may take advantage of a current sale going on at a popular outdoor retailer (beginning with "O").

The snugging makes it more comfortable and also provides a catch when I slip the suspenders off and fold down.

yeah it's comfortable and safe and all that.  but its main purpose is to assure the angler that he/she looks good on the stream.

a prominent board member on here once told me while we were fishing and he didn't have his wading belt that "he felt fat"
most of the time looking good out there is half the battle to catching fish, to be honest.

Thanks guys. Most streams im fishing now...I wont drown, even with full waders, as long as I can just roll over.

I'll probably use it this fall in higher water though.

dru! you posted while I was typing...that's good stuff!

Of course, I dont need it to look good. The fish are always in awe of my massive amount of good looks. It explains why the majority of the steelhead I caught last year were hens...but it makes me that much more suspicious of the males I caught...

i don't remember the name of the guy i was fishing with.....but i must admit i prefer having a wading belt.  esp. since mine is pretty nice, came with my waders, and it gets thick in the back to act like somewhat of a back brace.

also, as i recall, i think i may have a caught slightly more female steelhead last year than males, but i'm not out to try to impress the fish, only the females humans i seemingly never come across while out on the stream.

My first day of fishing up there for the main run...the first hours of the first day...there was a smokin' hot woman fishing across from me (with her husband). I was pleased, but if I'd have known that she'd be the ONLY one, all winter, I'd have taken a picture.

I don't wear a wading belt cause I'm fat enough to fill the waders up completely. The only problem with that is when I f@rt my knees balloon out!

Using simms anything gives you quite the advantage when fishing around the other hodge-podgers, we all know that!

i wade pymatuning in early spring, after ice out.  with non-neoprene waders, it has helped stretch the day when a rogue wave lets some water in.  won't keep you completely dry, but prevents some water from going into you waders.

If you haven't figured it out by now by the posts, the wading belt will do nothing to slow down the water coming into your waders. If it did, the belt would have to be so tight you could'nt breathe. Same thing with the "belts" in a pair of hip waders that noboby ever uses, same principle, it's not going to stop the water from pouring in ( I cut mine out as soon as I get a new pair). You are in waders up to your hips or chest, be prepared to bail/cut yourself out of them the minute you think you are in trouble.
