Proof that trout dont simply evaporate in the summer...

After weeks of very little to nothing in terms of trout fishing, I finally got out yesterday with the chance to hit it hard. Went to a small local creek, that, even in normal conditions, is only about 10-20 feet across in most places. In mid-July, with low, clear water, it seems even smaller. Had to do a little searching, but early season scouting paid off and I was able to find a few holes holding nice fish. Managed to land three really nice ones, a brookie and a brown at 15" each, and a bigger brown at 16.5". Buggers were the order of the day, with a special preference for a "bunny bugger", which substitutes the palmered hackle with a collar of cross-cut rabbit.

Pics!

Note the especially "pointy" mouth on this guy...not sure what was up there. His inside of his mouth was also dark gray/black, not the typical white.

(Experimenting with Picasa...I liked the sepia setting for this one...)

Yeah, that bummed me out too, but really, he was hooked in the corner of the mouth, fought quickly, and swam off strong. methinks he scraped himself in the brush the swam into during the fight. Before he took off, I made sure to clean him up and made sure he wasn't gonna crap out. If I didnt think he was gonna make it, he'd have come home with me.

This summer has been pretty conducive to trout fishing this year....no complaints here!

I hit the streams about 5:00 A.M. Sat. I did real good. Beautiful morning. I fished new water, caught a couple of nice wild fish in the middle of July I never would of thought.

    Beautiful creek isn't

Beadhead Hare's Ear was the flavor of the day.

I've been out 6 of the last 10 days, mostly in the morning.
20 BWO & 20 sulphurs in the evenings.
The morning have been on fire with 24's and 26's.  A few caddis in the 16-18 range.
It's not often we get such good dry fly fishing this far into summer.
I've hit a few local trout streams in the popular areas and there is still a lot of trout left over.
the Crowe beetle has taken some good fish.
The fish in some of the streams have really put on weight. On Saturday, all my fish were over 12" with a couple in the 18"-19" range. The two big ones on a 24 male trico and 26 BWO.
Saw a nice 24"+ brownie rooting under the rocks for cray fish.
There's going to be some nice holdovers come next year.
