Fished eyes out of walnut yesterday. Fishing was slow but ok for the first time ever taking the boat out there. Hit 7 fish in 71 FOW on purple / black willow blade harnesses out north of perch pack . Got one nice 8lber & enough fillets to keep my buddies comin' back . Have you ever had crawler harnesses break on you ? My 20 lb mono had no problem but the steel part of my brand new weldon lures ( out of Cleveland ) broke twice . Who makes a dependable rig ? I know the first break off was a steelhead as he danced straight out of the water 8ft or so but the second dug for pay dirt . I will never get those weldons again.

Speaking of walleyes, a few more weeks and the action should pick up at the river outflow. If you want to consistently catch 20-25"  walleyes, head on down. Size 10 HJ's in fluoroescent colors (can't go wrong with the glass ones).

Greg: I'd guess they are rapala husky jerks.

Sorry . Me being rather new to off shore fishing what river or tributary are you refering to? Do you flatline em , anchor & fish once you locate the school , drift fish ? A little advice will be greatly appreciated . Should I go for a natural husky jerk or a large color selection ? Thanks

He is referring to the Shenango River outflow below the Shenango Dam.  By the way .....it will be stocked with trout again on Tuesday, October2.

I was wondering when their fall stocking was going to be...that's good to hear though.

Anyway, they aren't hard to locate at the outflow. Just fish along the near bank at the wall with a steady cast and retrieve. Be sure to pause every few seconds as this is where alot of the strikes will occur. Personally, I've had my best luck when all seven gates are open to atleast 1.5 feet each. It most likely will be pretty fast because of the lake drawdown.

I typically wade out a little bit in these conditions (and I reiterate 'little bit' because when all seven gates are open that much it's very hairy and dangerous) but there's no reason you couldn't fish on the bank because the walleye are chasing bait right along it.

I had quite a few days where I'd go down right after work and, though I typically release all the fish, catch what would be considered a limit of walleye in an hour or two.

I've found this to be your typical mid-October Shenango River outflow walleye size...

Lastly, for those who've never fished the river before...keep your rod tip high to avoid snags. That river probably owes me $1000 in lures over the last few years. Without looking to be completely sure, the HJ line or Rapalas can get down to anywhere between 6-12 feet. For walleye, these have outfished everything else I've tried though.

Good idea with the catch and release. Don't know how far they've traveled from downriver to get there. Lots of dead industries dumped down river for years. Dont want you glowing in the dark from all those chemicals from the landfill.

Put the yak in the river and went to the lake. Only managed one bass. Did better on the west side thats for sure. Did see a bunch of snake birds and one curiose beaver. There were a good many shad balls in the lake.

Fished the lake on friday and did pretty good. Kept 16, all over 10"s. 13ft deep over brush. Jig or spoon and nibble worked best. Didn't use any live bait but they should be hitting minnows now too. Fried some up today for the neighbors. Hope to get out again tuesday or wednesday morning. 7:30. See you at the launch.

Tuesday sounds like the best day to go, according to the weather. I was walking Mika on Ferguson Point Friday and only saw a toon with a brown enclosure anchored in the channel. A nice day for sure.
