Shenango really stinks!

I just got back from shenango and had a really bad day.  Does anybody ever catch any bass there?  We fished for 8 hours, caught 2 bass, and had maybe 4 other bites.  We went all the way up to the stumps and all the way to the 10 horse limit zone. I really like the lake, but other people told me they don't really catch alot up there either. I want to go back because I think the lake is beautiful but would also like to catch some fish.  The only excitement we had was when a squawking blue heron flew out of a tree right above our heads. Scared the crap out of us.

Welcome to the club! Most of my tactics that work fair to well on other lakes can't buy me a fish there. The only success spots (usually) is the sub. island in front of the swimming area with cranks, mostly jointed raps.Tossing spinnerbaits etc. at shore line structure RARELY ever gets me a bite.Do get them trollin the shorelines(boring). The thing that keeps me goin back is the beauty of the lake and Throwin tubes at the rip rap at bridges after dark.

If you launch at army corps go to the right under the bridge and run up the lake, past a big island and you'll see it a little further up on right side. Only roped off swim area there as far as I know, but I may be wrong.

Chauny, glad you popped in here! I'm more awake now(any excuse will do), I was thinkin above the next bridge. Know my way around pretty well when I'm on the water, not to well when I'm in my head sittin at home! Be headin up today after my daughters friend shows for some playing around. May try some of the dropoffs after the crowd thins. At the least I hope to put the girls on some whites on top in the evening.

funny how chaunc shows up like superman to save the day.  if anyone can put an angler on fish there, it would be he.  rumor has it that he owns the lake. or he laid it out like jack nicklaus would a golf course.   chaunc, one question, a buddy of mine says that crappie caught in july and august have mushy filets?  any truth?  don't think i ever kept any from this late in the summer.

This time of year, you HAVE TOO get the fish on ice immediately, or they will get mushy fast. Dont throw them in the livewell and expect for them to stay fresh because you keep circulating the water. That water is 80 degrees coming into the livewell too. Just throw them in the cooler of ice. Make sure you open the bag so that the ice can get below and on top of the fish.

Giz, i saw the stripes bustin bait a couple hundred yards above the mahaney tressell, on the west bank, last week. Next time i'll make sure to take a couple pics. Awesome sight and easy pickins.

Chaunce, just got back in and I was right about bein wrong about you bein right. Somethin like that! I was thinkin about the island(I thought it was!),till I went to drive around it today. Funny how little I really know on there, Although if I dug a trench back there it would be an island! Fished from 7;30-8:30 off the point in front of campground, found some willing biters on the drop from 4 to 9'. Lots of small, but got 10 keepers(threw them on ice)then hit the rip rap for bass till a little after 10. Boated 6 and kept 4 to add in for a fish fry, 2 largemouth 2 smallies. Lost a smallie at the boat that was pushin 19-20" . Man do they pull !

Giz... Sounds like you had a good day. What were you catching the bass on at the rip rap?  I thought about trying black tubes there.  I'm going to try to get up there on friday.

Hoss, I do best with any dark color there,my two go to's are smoke with red flakes and black/blue tail. My major down fall is the spinning gear, they (I) don't have the speed cause 90% of the time they hit and come at the boat. I miss alot due to poor hookset . Enjoy!

Giz... I went back up on friday and only managed two bites.  I talked to some of the guys on the lake and they were not catching any either. I think I found the island in front of the swimming area. It goes from like 13 feet to 4. I tried it around 11 am but did'nt manage any bites. Thought it would be better in the morning or evening.  I am heading up on sunday and giving it one more try.  The blue heron managed to give me another heart attack.

My wife was with me in our tan Fisher.  I seen the guys in the Tuffy and I saw a red Lund. How did you do?  Our bass club in Clarion is having a tournament on Sunday up there. Trying to find some fish, but not doing to well.  How did you do?  I feel like going to Erie to build some confidence.

Went to shenango 2 straight days. The crappies are feeding heavily on the shad. I put a shad type jig on and hammered the crappies. Lots of small ones but managed to get 41 keepers in 2 days. These fish are fat and full. Some real nice fillets on em. Fished brush in 13ft, near the drop. Lost a dz jigs but i think it was worth it. Heading to erie to do some perchin tomorrow.

Went out of Conneaut, Ohio sunday. The eyes have moved to deeper water and are holding close to the bottom in 75ft. Used the riggers to get down there but only got 2 to bite. Got one, lost one at the boat. Moved in shallower where we got limits the last couple weeks but the whitebass have taken over there. They slammed everything we used. Decided to just do some perchin and took 19 home. Also kept 12 WB with the one walleye. Not a bad day on erie. Lake laid down so well, we drift fished for the perch. They were in 63ft, east of the pack.

Ditto. Chauce, just to change things up a bit, tied one of Kieths airplane ? jigs to a3/8 ouce jig with about 6" pice of floro tipped with a piece of crawler, they loved it and with crystal braid you could feel them hit it like you were in 20" of h2o.Had to change the floro a couple times once it got kinked it caused twisting problem but other than that, worked good. Got a few strange looks swimmin out there, but it sure felt good ! (Mika, you're e-mails always brighten my day !!)

The microspoon bite is starting to heat up now. Casting a 1/64 with a crappie nibble is pulling some nice fish. I fished the blowdowns on the west shoreline and hammered crappies and bass. Smallmouth were slammin the green spoon. No keeper size tho. Candy green rattles worked well on the crappies. Check out the website. www.microspoons.com Some real nice jigheads with sickle hooks too.

Chauncy, were you in the red boat by 846? We did ok. 8 bass and one large crappie on a white spinner bait. Saw an older gent in a nice cuddy trolling for stripers. He hooked up right beside us and landed a 27incher. The bay at the launch was full of fish. The locater showed many, many fish from 4-7 ft. down. I guessed them to be crappie.

No. I'm just sitting here on the puter waiting for the steeler game to start. Probably wont get out until tuesday. Headed to the burgh to see the shoulder doc in the morning. My buddy Ron said he was going this morning. He'll let me know how they bit today. I'm gonna fry some walleye, fries, have a few cold ones (gatorade) and enjoy the game.
