Edward John

Just curious - does anyone what the deal is about the EJ getting most of the posts in the reports? Seems like that's all you read about. Wasn't sure if the crew has 10 different screen names or if they tell the customers where to post, etc. Don't get me wrong - it's nice to read reports and see where to start out at, especially for those with smaller boats that can't relocate and find 'em quickly. But man, it gets old after awhile. Anyone know the deal?
Also, I get a kick when someone from the EJ reports 'secret spot'. The boat is what? 50 ft long? and all red. It's not hard to find it - even standing on the lakeside beaches at PI...

When they say they have 35 anglers on board and they catch 220 Perch....That's about 7 Fish per person....Doesn't seem like they are doing that well this year. I think there is 2 or 3 people posting about it along with people that board it to go fishing...

Yeah, I know. We've been out for perch a handful of times this year. It's usually either 2 or 3 people in our boat. And we haven't hammered the perch, by any means, but our perch per person average has always been better than EJ's. I've been joking with the family that we should start a perch charter using our boat :) I would think cramming 30-40 people all in one area can be tough, though.
Just wasn't sure if it's the same folks over and over, as you said, or if there were political ties, whatever.
    Thanks

Just seeing people fishing from the EJ cured me from ever wanting to try it. I'd go nuts fishing that close to everyone else. Steelheading on Walnut isn't even that bad.

But, if you really like fish and have no other means to get out and perch, I guess it isn't too bad of a deal. They are in business for a reason. Maybe if I had kids it'd be a fun family day. That or chartering the whole boat for a youth group or class trip or something like that might be okay.

The fishing report page only gets about 3 posts a week this time of year, so it seems like there's alot of EJ posts when there's really only two.

3 posts per week, that's .42857143 posts per day.

Seems that the only people that post are the people trying to pimp their business anymore...I think a lot of people think they are burning their spots if they post on there..I know I don't post where I have been fishing on there....Last year when i did that, I went out the next weekend to find that it looked like Interstate 90 trolling around where I was...I learned that lesson real quick....

If the reports are from the same person he is probably one of the season pass holders that goes out almost every day.
They are also the ones that pass around a tip bucket.
A few people will catch a lot of fish and a some will only catch a few.
Last time I was there people to the front had a lot of action.
I do not know if it was skill or just where they were-probably a little of both.

I think if they were smart "the bear" would quite posting reports of full boats catching 230 perch and acting like they did something amazing.  Like posted above we go out with 4 guys and get 120 in 2 and a half hours and it takes them 6 with 40 guys to catch 230?     I just dont get it why would they advertise this?

Just cuz the EJ says they didn't do that well doesn't mean the fishing wasn't good on the east side....I have been out there and limited when they said they were struggling...

Guys remember this:  10% of all fisherpersons catch 90% of the fish. Its that simple. Some people know how to fish, some don't. Bigslick I feel the same as you, I do not post on the reports page like I use to in the past. Spoonfeeding is not a good habit.

    Loaftech,
Maybe to these guys the amount of fish to fisherman ratio IS amazing..so be it..Why is it the guys who claim to catch their limit in these record times have to compare themselves to the guys who go out and catch a smaller amount? Could it be ego? insecurity? Just something to think about.
I was invited along one time to go on a head boat for perch and had a pretty good time and some of the guys had a great time..4 years later and we still laugh about the one guy on board who was the strangest charachter ever..  How many perch did we catch? I have no idea......wasnt important...but to some on board they may have only caught a few but it may have been amazing to them..Good for them..No egos were on board that I could see.

The bear is a season pass holder,I've talked with him aboard the Edward john...his reports are accurate for the most part. @ the of each trip he'll ask around to see how many fish are caught.I believe that Gary of poor richards salvaged the boat & started the trips, the boat was sold to the current owners a few years ago.A friend & I went on the ed. johns 2nd trip....we were the only 2 fares.Still went fishin don't remember how many were caught but it was a blast.230 fish for that boat is low, a slow day, but I've been out before & only caught 2 fish ( that sucked ) but my last 2 trips were 26 (mostly jumbos ) & 27 (average) fish.I know i did better than some because I've done it before. There was families & newbies aboard also ( that effects the catch rates ). It does take some time to get 30 people their limit.1st trip this year 30 people boated 780+/- fish that ain't so bad...Captain & crew are a class act, I will go with them again...the Victory has been in port, I think the Edward john is the only party boat running right know, that's why so many posts, good or bad.

i went fishing on ej one evening was just looking for something to do 40 people got maybe 8o perch no reports on line about that one they just report good days but most of the people fishing might not be the best anglers around so 200 perch in 4 hr fishing is,t to bad considering 30 dollars to go ain,t bad they just make it sound like every body catches alot of fish may do it again to kill a morn or eve

In reply to Slammer8 and all others. The Capt. and crew of the Edward-John have no part in the posts. The post are from anglers who enjoyed or not enjoyed their trip on the Edward-John, there is no commercial or political intent. I post most of the reports because I enjoy the trips and wish to share with others who care to read the reports. The reports contain information about the trips be it good or not so good. There are no bad reports because there are no bad days fishing, only some not so good catching. The boat is sometime full but what better way is there to make some nice new friends and maybe catch a few Perch.

I think most of the guys on here complaining about the EJ need to relax. If you don't like the posts don't read them just like the people that complain about what's on TV... change the channel for crying out loud! If you are lucky enough to own a boat to go out on Erie good for you go and leave the EJ to us less fortunate that don't have a boat of their own. I went on the EJ for the first time about 3 weeks ago for an evening trip and day trip. First trip not so good but caught some fish the next morning there were 40 people on board and only about 6 people limited out, myself and my buddy were lucky enough to get our limits with some perch measuring 13” and 14”. The guy beside me and his Dad only caught half the fish we did. Was it luck, experience, right place at the right time, who knows and who cares? It still beat any good day at work. Capt. John and his family do a great job to try and make everyone’s trip successful. Maybe a head boat is not your cup of tea. Well so be it, but they are there to provide a service and make a living too.

Lighten up guys and enjoy your time you do get to fish no matter where or how you do it!

VERY well put Ed.  Too many people worrying about what other folks are or are not doing.  As Stevie Gaines (Lynyrd Skynyrd) once wrote:

Well now I dont read that daily news

They cant dig what they cant use
    If they stick to themselves
    Theyd be much less abused...
