I'm actually heading up to Northern Manitoba for a trip on Monday, KJH.  All I've read has been bunny strip mainly and large streamer or clouser patterns.  The bunny strip in black, about 6" I read somewhere takes a majority of the fish at certain times of the year with it imitating an easy prey meal for pike (leeches).

I debated taking my fly rod up on my first trip way north... I think I'm bringing too much gear as it is arleady.  A few of the guys from my work who have taken this trip before have landed some on the fly up there - maybe next trip for me.

let me know how you do...
    How far north?  thompson?
    guide or DIY?

i worked in Northern MN/Canada for 2 summers on the same lake we are heading to
fished EVERYday ... but all spin (spoons and inline spinners)

I have a bunch of decievers, bunny leeches, and zonkers... but most are only like 4"

get some of those mammoth rat flies that they use for huge browns in argentina.

i got some other stuff you can borrow.

dont bother with the toothy critter leaders, just get some 20 lb or braided for the last bit of your leader.

can def be a blast at lakes like high point

Use synethetics for the bodies, they will hold up to the teeth better.  Pike will destory feathers after one or two fish.

Id think you'd want 6-10" flies.  And not rabbit strips that big, unless you don' twant to cast them very far.

Some of those Enrico Puglisi type ties look killer to me.

Dalhburg divers work great, big poppers, bigger the better but keep it light as possible with artificial materials.  Toothy Critter (sp) is the terminal material that will last and is easy to tie.

i've used a flyrod for pike and it's a blast. i caught fish up to 40" long. for fly selection i kept it very simple. most of them were just 4 - 6 6" long bugger hackles tied to a 2/0 siwash hook then dub the body and wrap hackle to the eye, basically a giant wooly bugger. colors are simple too white, black, yellow, chartreus, orange and my best was red/white combo. i also, since the trip ties other color combos to try. i would also try the dahlberg types also and bunny leech. i used a wire bite leader and had no issues with working the fly.

any tips on keeping pike/bass flies weedless?  i have a few that have a strong piece of mono from the eye ties back under the hook, but they still pick up a good bit of vegetation...

What about weed guards like big bass jigs have? Its coarse plastic fibers, like a broom. You've probably seen them...

ya i've seen those.  but would be a pain to tie on, plus would add extra weight...  especially on an already large fly that you're trying to keep nearer the surface...

The guards never seemed heavy to me, but of course thats in relation to a 3/4 ounce bass jig. I think the brand name is Fiberguard. I don't know much about tying flies like that, but if you've got a heavy fly already, you might be right, they might add too much weight... Then again, if you are slinging them on a spey rod, it might not matter...

I've just never thought that those single strand mono weed guards worked very well...

The best, of course, would be to tie a floating fly, the way that Grass Frogs are made, w/ an up-facing hook and an up-facing stinger...

we shall see.  i've always casted pike flies on 8-9 weight 9'footer.  not fancy enough like Kev.

i had a pike hit at high point on a big fly after i had already picked up about a pound of vegetation...

did you put a weed guard on the hook. because the rabbit strips have a tedency to wrap around the hook bend.
