river catfish

just wanted to let you know i think the allegheny's good to go for big cats. fished the allegheny last night from about 730pm to 5am from a boat. got a 28" channel deep right at dark and a couple nice flats at 12 and 1 am. one 40 incher, aprox 25lb? the bigger one hit a live 5" blue gill in about 4FOW. we fell asleep for a couple hours and when we woke up, my big rod was spooled, the drag was very loose, but there was a 6" blue gill on the end and about 4oz. of weight. also missed a couple heavy fish right after dark. by the way those were my biggest flat and channel cats to date.

Any action around kittanning? I haven't caught decent cats there since that big run of them about 15 years ago up there.

Congrats on the cats.  The Blues & Flatheads are in spawning mode right now in Virginia so it'll be another month or so before I head back out.

im not trying to spot burn or anything, i usually fish below lock 3 near harmarville but ive been wanting to fish freeport at night (from a boat)for flatheads. i cant decide if i want to fish the kiski river side or the buffalo creek side. i was planning on anchoring on the upstream side of the kiski river do you think its too shallow there? i havent been there in a while not really sure where a prime area in that pool would be any info would be great thanks

If I was fishing from a boat I would fish the whole river.Above the kiski is a small island,I'd fish around there.Below the kiski is a railroad bridge, fish around the piers.Rt 356 bridge is another place I would start around the piers. Below that bridge is a bend in the river that was just dredged out last year,in a friends boat we marked 65 feet of h2o,another good spot, fish the outside of it.Spot burning????It's the river dude...There is so many good spots that it would be hard to spot burn.It gets pounded on the weekends by the rec. boaters,so plan a trip durn the week.Fished Friday night, lots of boats, Monday night 1 boat.Monday's tally 1 22 inch walleye, 1 small sauger,5 channels all about the same size, biggest going 22+ inches. Also had 2 bigger fish that snagged me off in the rocks.Good luck!

Pretty soon the spawn will be upon us and the fishing will SUCK for atleast 3 weeks.  Hit Freeport 2 weeks ago and going again Thursday night.  Last time I went we ended up with 8 flats, biggest was right at 20#.  All caught in about 35' of water, no idea why so deep all night long.  I was fishing the dredge line below the 356 bridge.  Most of them were hitting cut trout although a few caught on live gills.

Checked the river this am, current is swifter than the norm. for this time of the year......but,the water is relatively clear for the river.there is little debris floating along & the level is up but nowhere near that it would keep you from attempting to catch some fish.Yes the river was up & there was some debris floating last Monday as well, none of which prevented folks from fishing Monday should be a great day to give it a go..good luck.

Hit it again at Freeport on Thursday night.  Again the flats were deep.  Like Ken said the water was movin pretty good.  Biggest flat was only 17# and biggest channel was 8#.  The fishing was pretty steady until that **** full moon came out and then it was over for the night.

last week i got a 29lb flat on the big o and the other day got a 15 lb flat just 300 yards down. i got a hand full of dinks as well. all were on live gills. and early this week my buddy got a 13 lber at hpd that was on alive sucker. seems like the want live stuff. they might be spwaning but all the ones i 'v caught have no marks on them so they ain't ready yet too. and they are have been really fat even the small one's are just gorgeing them self's still. so get out there and hit them hard they are still bitting.

your "game fish" is my bait.....got flathead!!
