Somewhere Over The Rainbow

someone told me about this killer pond for brookies & rainbows. it was a fond memory they had some 20 years ago. friday i was eager to find this new water, heck maybe I'll get that Trophy brook trout and catching rainbows would be a treat. we hiked hard, 40# packs and a 17' canoe up through a outlet brook and uphill bushwack. It was Rough, on the way up and as we found quite easy going down.
As we reached our destination I had to chuckle at all the sights of those before us that made the journey, some really hardy souls.

Here lies Home for 3 days:

and so we hit the water in the evening for some fat trout. First tour of the pond and I get a fish on. It fights and jumps like a bow but once close to the canoe I see brown, yup smallmouth bass. Now my heart sinks, bass in a trout pond ? not good  !!   We make another trolling pass and my rod rips out of my hold and screems line. My partner says "what you got a bullhead ? " I'm really scratching my head.... It's fighting on an ultra light rod like crazy, doubling the rod under the canoe. Maybe just maybe RECORD Brookie   !!!!!!
I see it swim under the canoe and I start to shake, SPLAKE ???
Nope it does a roll and showed it's self....  Laker Big Laker   !!!
In a brook trout pond ???
No brookies or bows for me there but this fish hit the.
                     The Pot Of Gold...

So much more of a great weekend but we hiked hard, played hard & fished hard...
                     I'm beat.

Wow. Looking at that picture of camp and the lake in the backround makes me wish I had the time to explore the Adirondacks. I'm absolutely green with envy for all you guys that do this.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

ya know, I feel a bit foolish. Catching and guiding trout to have a trout species come into question. I have caught splake before nowhere near that size and I have caught lakers that size. Usually when I fish a water I know what species may take my rig, this was virgin (to me) waters with very little info as to the species. It was almost dark when caught and just the size alone I thought laker. BUT upon furthur review of all things I proclaim .... Monster SPLAKE...

not qiute a record fish but close indeed...

I am wondering if that stockie plane might have dropped some splake instead of Lakers?  I'd never heard of anything more than Brookies and Rainbows in there, so even the Smallies took me by surprise.

But I do know who I can ask about the Splake/Laker connundrum...  I will check in with him tomorrow and see what he says.  There just didn't seem to be as much color as I would expect on a Splake...  But who knows!

Now this is the kind of Splake I would like to see:

Regardless, I thought for it must surely have been a beaver or a loon when that rod doubled back on itself for ten minutes!!!  What a dinosaur that thing was!!!  Awesome!!!

I know most splake (1/2) that size I have caught have given me some par markings of a brookie which was easy to tell splake right away. This dinosaur was showing it's age and all remnants of brook trout long faded.
I have been told splake will live 40 years, This beast must be pushing 10.

Here is a photo of what was claimed to be a record brook trout caught this year. Later comfirmed Splake...
    Our fish was much bigger........

Tuna:  That is NOT a splake you caught, but the skinniest laker I've ever seen--on offense intended.  A splake would have had much more color.  I don't see anything on that fish that would even make me suspect a splake.  Can't get a good look at the tail, was it forked or square?
