    Quietman-

I fish mostly the same as you with a nymph trailing an egg pattern.  It sounds bad to say that I fish the same way everytime, but I've become confident enough with that setup on all of the tribs that I just rig it up before I go. I can then just make minor changes with the trailer and weight once I get to the stream.

I've had good luck with many of the popular egg colors that are common in the Erie area.  This pattern also works well on trout in many waters.

Just five?  For the whole season?
I've gone through that many flies in one day.

I'd probably carry 3 olives woolly buggers and 2 in white.

Anyone have a picture of this fly? I think I can picture it, but I don't know that I have ever seen it.

    Justin,
Normally I carry about 300 flies but I keep going back to:
             1.  Orange Sucker Spawn #14
             2.   Olive Wooly Bugger
             3.   Pearl scud #16/18
             4.   Black Wooly Bugger
             5.   One of Bughawks'  Copperstonescuds  He created it, and it works.  (Looks like a scud shape (arched back) with stone tail ( split vee) and a copper wrapped body that lets the dubbing (brown) through.

flip hook upside down, tie in a small amount of white hair, rotate hook right side up again, tie in a small amount of crystal flash. Tie in a small clump of olive bucktail, form thread head, stick on prizm eyes and epoxy.

Can't go wrong with that.. Wolly Buggers are excellent steelhead flies. Really that's the "universal" fly I think. Catches most fresh water fish.

If I could only carry five different types of flies:

    Black wooly bugger
    "Salmon Roe" orange sucker spawn
    Olive wooly bugger
    white wooly bugger
    pink sucker spawn

I'd probably need at least 300 of each, seeing how I'm probably going to be feeding two sons and two nephews.

    soft hackle

and that is about all I ever use.  every now and then I pull out a stone or something of that nature, but those 5 (in that order) never leave my box
