Lifetime License

I don't want to go through the whole fee debate again. Also I am not rich by any means but to me saving money just makes sense. I bought my 3 year old granddaughter a lifetime sportsman license last year for $300.00. To me that was a no brainier but now my wife is trying to make me think about buying one for myself. I'll tell you, I'm 43 years old and bow hunt also. The current rate for my lifetime sportsman is $600.00 and then add bow hunting lifetime another $180.00 = $780.00. My first thought was man, that’s way too much money but after listening to her reasoning "do you plan on hunting & fishing another 9 years" ? after that it is all free, no matter what the license fees may increase after that. Hummm, makes sense.
So this Friday I will be heading to the clerks office and paying for my future.

These lifetime license fees also are planned to increase on Oct-1 .
If any one who can afford to purchases one and plans on fishing NY for at least 9 years then I would strongly suggest that is the way to go.

here are the current prices:

This is weird, at dinner i was discussing how i wish to purchase a lifetime this year.  I guess i did not have to look to far for info.  I plan on getting one, i take lots of fish and can see myself living in the lake george area someday, the price will only rise..

Fishing ONLY is longer than 9 years payback - if I am understanding the cost correctly.... $350 one-time vs $19 yearly - payback is 18+years.
Also For those 65+ your cost of a yearly fishing drops to $5 so the $50 fishing lifetime for 65+ has a 10 year payback.

Only problem with the payback over time theory is that the yearly rate won't go up.  Based on past experience that is a misnomer.  Best to get it now and avoid all the future increased fees.
Of course with all this talk about guns being regulated you may be hunting with a slingshot.

Fishing goes up to $29 in October. $350/$29 = 12.07 years. If there is just one increase in that time frame it would most likely bring that under 10 years. If you have the scratch a life time license is definitely the way to go.

Agree prices will continue to go up year after year... (Comment on new state budget omitted)

another way to look at it...
Say you have $400 making 5%  (If you do - please let me know where)
your interest would cover the cost of the seasonal fishing (at least for now), and you'd get to keep your $400 principal for life.

$400 at 5% compounded daily for one year yields $20.51 in interest, roll it over the yield after 2 years is $42.07 for 3 is $64.73. So your making a little over $20 a year to start would take several years to get to an average yield of $29 to cover yearly license. That's if you could find a bank with 5%. At current my bank is .75% for a pass book account, 2% for a 5 year CD. If you find that 5% let a brother know...

    Wisdom,

I hear you on the interest rates, 1.5% is the best I've seen in a savings acct of late...  my fishing license for 2009 (bought in Sept 08) was $19. has the price changed? or is that $29 with another endorsement?  Even at $19 today for fishing only -  as soon as Patterson raises the price, this method would eat away at your principle investment.

Thanks Wisdom I told you we were on the same page here. If however I were just a fisherman and not an all around sportsman then I would have to consider the cost per age per savings as to if a lifetime license would benefit. And honestly the out of pocket expense of $350.00 once or $29.00 per year. Think I'd opt at the latter at my age. I was looking at the larger picture of super sportsman and all privileges at $88.00 per year vs $780.00 for life and my age reflects a 9 year cap.

At 42 and someone who strictly fishes, if I had the extra cash I probably wouldn't buy a life time for myself even if in the long run it would be of some savings. I would instead buy one for my grandchildren or great nephews who would get a longer use of it thus a better savings. In turn this  has the added advantage of passing on an incentive to the next generation.

My youngest is 11 and my oldest is 14. Hoping their grandpa would do it as we are forking out hundreds for summer boyscout camp, summer lacrosse camp, among a food bill for two growing boys that never stop eating. Besides all this, my father bought one for me when I was $18. I just don't want to ask...lol...you know how that is.

mmm, you never know how things turn out when you get older. I started hunting when I was 6 killed my first deer at 7 started fishing about the same time now if i'd gotten one then it would have paid off. but strangly the things you love to do change. EVERY one that ever knew me would bet that steve, thats me would never stop hunting or fishing. I did 4 things in life, I worked fished, hunted, took a shower, then repeat was married for two yrs before I notticed I had a wife. I worked (only to pay for my hunting and fishing) and i hunted by the season doves dove season squirls squirls season deer season and you get the idea when there was no hunting season I fished i slep when I just couldnt stay awake ate and crapped while i hunted and fished sex? IF it didnt interfere with hunting or fishing. be at the lake hrs before daylite leave hrs after dark, back would feel like knives sticking it but didnt care I LIVED TO HUNT AND FISH! where am I goin with this long winded point? just this, when I moved up here i fished and hunted Killing my first pope and young and then adding 2 more to it here thx. bow in westchester. then 7 yrs ago just stopped. quit fishing and hunting dont know why just tired of it and didnt care. I havent started hunting again BUT I have started fishing again and listening to you guys have stirred some great old memories and put the love of fishin back in these old bones. so lifetime liscenes, who knows?
