a friendly reminder

A little while ago me and my friend went to check out Lock 2 on the Hudson, Just to look around.
after getting back in the car my friend noticed a Tick crawling on his hand. He looked a little closer and found 5 or 6 more crawling around on him. I checked my clothes, saw nothing. I get home, start reading the boards and I start to feel something crawling on my leg. I take a look and found 3 Ticks crawling on my leg.

We spent no more than 15 minutes walking around, Didn't walk through any tall grass or anything, and we had them all over us.

So.... just letting everyone know that they should keep this in the back of their minds when "Bushwhackin'" for trout or whatever else you're doing outdoors this year.

Thanks Pike, great reminder. Check yourself. I have already pulled 2 off the dog in the last 2 weeks. Looks like this is going to be a bad year in this area. The ADK's do however always seem to get fewer tick problems.

Pike excellent reminder about these dirty little devils! lol  , there was a time me and my bro took our dog hunting  in a WMA at stewarts airforce base and we never seen ticks that bad anywhere else... never again will we ever go there after picking dozens upon dozen off us and the dog. I use off (deet) spray for the outer cloth when I know ticks are a risk. Yeah, I know a few people who live with that lime disease and it has to suk.

Force, I am not big on deet direct skin contact unless it really is bad, I'll use it on the hat and outerwear,, I'm not ashamed to admit I sometimes smell like a town w---e using skin so soft .. that stuff works imo. not as good for black flies though but it works well enough.

I know several people that have lime disease and it's not fun ...  Ya can never go wrong with  SSS . Avon ROCKS !!! just might **** the wife off that your skin is softer then hers though .....

Thanks Reel, and Blitz I'm a little paranoid now too..... wondering if any jumped off somewhere in my apartment.....
I'll definately be looking into some of that bug spray.
Out of all the times i've gone Fishing or Camping I've never found a Tick on me before. It definately caught me off guard, but I guess it's a good thing though also.
Now I'll be keeping a close lookout for them.
What amazed me the most was how small they were, Literally "bugged me out"

Just a word of caution on the Skin So Soft. Works great but watch out, the stuff makes your hands slick as heck. Lost a nice rod and reel onetime cause I was in a hurry and forgot to wipe my hands..

If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat!

I heard that eating garlic might deter tick bites.  even if you can get the pooch to eat some mixed in dry food it might be worth a shot.  here is something i just googled http://www.mosquitobarrier.com/

great reminder, unfortunatly I deal with them constantly. I have found hundreds on me never had one imbedded though.

Wear light color clothes, I wear a ton of kahki pants, tuck in your pants or get a pair of gators. Personally I wear gators treated in pyrethrin, kills them on contact. Always check yourself. Like I said I found hundreds on me and never had one imbedded before you get back in your car check. THEY SUCK I HATE THOSE LITTLE F%#$ERS

Just pulled a nasty bugger out that started burrowing in my daughters leg.
They are bad, bad ,bad this year. While I rarely do but always should, keep checking they are out there in force...

    P.S.
A co-worker was having health issues last month. turns out he has lyme disease.  Got me thinking , I have been feeling pretty crapy with aches & pains. Figured I was out of shape but it is the first time I ever felt out of shape in my life. Maybe time to get a test, I had pulled a few buggers out last fall while deer hunting.

pike, i keep with me the "tecnu" brand, works pretty good..it is an outdoor skin cleanser and quickly removes the poison ivy/oak oils.. says it decontaminates laundry, pets and tools too. Yeah,i get that s--t easily wading /hiking and even though i keep my distance sometimes it is just too close to avoid exposure. First signs of itch or rash,i use the stuff. another great reminder gl  cattin this yr

well, if there's anything in the great outdoors that should be avoided..... i'll be the first to find it.
    Just lucky i guess.
this is the first time i can remember ever having it and well.... it sucks.
I'll have to check that tecnu stuff out.
As for the catfishin', i've pretty much switched over to catchin carp. those things are sooooo strong and are a hell of a lot of fun to catch. my new species obsession for the time being. i'll post some pics if i get a chance.

Wow Catfish and carp!  I like it Pike, you seldom see people target them.  You must be a very patient man though.... that kind of fishing requires lots of beer or herbal remedies.  I am too hyper I guess.  I suppose I could fish for other stuff while I wait though.  Whats your carp method? I see tons of them but never have anything dead or stinky on me to entice them.  (Well maybe the stinky I have sometimes after the beers.)

Most people see carp as "trash" fish and i'm fine with that. people give me funny looks sometimes when i tell them i'm fishing for carp, but aside for the month we have stripers here, where else are you going to catch a fish up to 30-40-50 lbs??
all last fall in my catfishin' spot (the one i told you about) me and my buddy kept seeing big carp jumping around, so i spent a lot of the winter watchin' european carp fishin' videos to figure out how to catch them.
as for bait, carp LOVE sweet stuff!! for bait i use "boilies" they are just little round balls with different flavors. i've been catching them on pineapple ice cream flavor and tutti fruitti flavors. and i attach them to a "hair rig", the bait is actually not attached to the hook. and i use a "method feeder" which is an in-line weight, you mix together some oatmeal and creamed corn and cake it all around the method feeder. the carp start feeding off the method feeder and work their way down to the boilie.
so far my biggest have been 26 lbs, a 24 lber and a bunch from 16-19 lbs, i'll post them up in a bit.
let me know if you want to give it a try sometime, i got all the stuff you need.

Pike I would definitely give it a go... I know the spot you talked about. I'm not gonna diss any 25 lb fish, whatever it is. When the stripers go away, PM me when youre ready to go.  I work nights with sun/mon nights off.  Maybe we can get a couple of the boys to try their hand at carping too

Being an Environmental Scientist down in Virginia I am contently dealing with ticks.  The best stuff I have used and am currently using is a product called Tick Stuff which is made by ARI.  It is a spray on product that you apply to your cloths and it is supposed to work I think for 2 weeks even with washing.  I have tried the high % DEET products but they don't seem to work nearly as good as Tick Stuff.  I haven't seen the product in the stores but you can get it off the internet.

the ingredient is pyrethrin, supposed to kill them too, if they stay on your clothes. don' spay it on your skin though.
