Gentlemen,
Has anyone been fishing the "J" after dark with a fly lately?   I can remember back in the 80"s we used to go down to the river and fish starting about 11pm and toss really big flies.  (Supposed to mimic a swimming mouse, Or Moose; I forget)   The hookups were few but the size of the browns that we caught were amazing.  I have even had 8 lb leader broken.

Yeah Jon's right. You may run into a whitefly hatch. It has been very spotty since the flood a few years ago. Whiteflies (Ephoron leukon) are a burrowing nymph that lives in the silt. A lot of the silt washed away and took the whiteflies and green drakes with it. You will still see some fishable hatches on the LJ, just not heavy ones.

Make sure you have beetles and ants as well as some #22-24 olives with a olive/brown body, to match the little olives that hatch that time of year.

Indy --

I do fish the J after dark.  Usually cahills and slate drakes in June.  The darkness really brings up some bigger fish.  I haven't this year though.

No spruce fly, A big honking caddis. I hooked one, laughed for a minute, then put the rod back in the truck.

You guys are lucky. I haven't been able to tie on my roll top for years. I am forced to tie on the computer desk (if I can find all the materials I need).

Well the fish commission was forced to close a hatchery because of pollution, so they should now prohibit trout feeding in Spruce, remember the State owns the water.  Also the Huntingdon residents   (not me I live in Juniata Township, 550 people in the whole township) are being forced to update their fairly recently built sewage treatment plant because of nutirents, why not close the dairy operation and any other corporate farms on the river or Spruce Creek. The commission has proof of the decimation of Spruce Creek, they recently declared that Spruce Creek below the Harvey water no longer supports wild trout, evidence enough to close the fish feeding operations.  There are suckers folks and that is US!

A firend fished Spruce this morning and did really well on wild trout and no beaver fish.  Perhaps my stink did something.  What, I don't know.

Spruce Creek now has a usgs gage.  It's not on the web yet though.
