Cathfish?

Just wondering when the best time of year to fish for catfish would be?

I'm right around the titusville area.

I'm not too keen on fishing the big river, so is the many lakes with good catfish numbers in them around here?

Catfish usually are the last to spawn, water temperature around 70*.  June, july and august are awesome times........usually around july they spawn, that is when the water finally reaches 70* in the local rivers if that is where you are going, find a shallow rock bar adjacent to deep water, set up here in the evening, the cats will come up on the bar at first dark and feed.........

The ark was built by an old fool, the titanic was built by professionals......

Yes , the sand and gravel is the old pit . I would hit the lower end where the water starts to shallow up . 4-6 in creek chubs , I fish them live , works for me . Summer time after the crappie spawn is all done . Good luck . Jake

It is a little early to catch Channels in the river IMHO.  But it is Possible and involves figuring out where they winter and being in nearby slack water or eddies...

far easier to fish in ice out lakes.  Shenango is a nice gem already mentioned on this thread and I had a blast there a week ago, although I liven in warren and shenango was 2hrs away.  the bite made it worth the drive IMHO...

other promising iceout lakes include pymy and morraine.  Have you catfished seriously before?  the main season starts in early May and by late may the river is red-hot for cats and some of considerable size.  The larger flathead catfish will be biting by then.

The problem is that up in Kinzua country, there seems to be so few GOOD lake options for cats.  where they exist they seem scattered.

I have found reports of people catching them or listed in PFBC at Tionesta reservoir, Alleghany reservoir, Lake Erie, Pymutuming, Shenango, Morraine (aka Lake arthur), Clarion reservoir (aka Piney dam), Crooked creek reservoir, Mahoning reservoir, Kyle Lake (near dubois), and Keystone power dam...

I'm sure there in a lot more ditches and small lakes.  they seem conspicuously absentin PFBC in the natural glacier lakes around edinboro/union city... instead a fun fish called the dogfish or bowfin seem to have a similar ecological niche....

thus as much as I sympthesize Not wanting to tackle the always changeable river, its always been and inviting and local option.  it has both quantity and quality.  Fishing is conspicuosly better south of tionesta; but I have really gotten in a lot of extra fishing, fishing 5-10 minutes away on weekday nites rather than the at most once in a week long drives (which is still another down side of only pursueing lake cats)...
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tie into an even smallish flathead, Josh and I think I could change your mind!  there are an incredible fish.  And really ONLY found in the alleghany river (the PFBC has beeen trying to Keep them out of west pa lakes)

also if you are not intimidated with the tribs what about smallish rivers.  The french doesn't seem to have much of a population but the Clarion is Top notch!

my only thing with the river is I've never fished it before and it seems really intimidating for me to fish.
I dont really know what to look for, where to fish or when.

    ok, I tried again.

If you don't see it still... try to pm me and I'll reply.  all I was saying is that we ought to get together.

we're local boys, we should chase cats together once the season starts.
