Adirondack Legend Fran Betters’ Plea for Help

I AM ASKING FOR HELP It is simply time to be very straight forward. I am in difficulty. Too many things happened at the same time. Number One: I was FORCED to move my business and decided since I HAD to, I would do it the correct way which took everything I had. Number 2: I came down with congestive heart failure which is now in its end stages and Number 3, the economy decided to tank all at the same time. How about that for a bit of luck? I cannot QUIT until I find a buyer for my business of forty seven years. I have to try and survive somehow. So I am asking for some help. If you have been considering buying one of my rods, please do so now. It could possibly be one of the last ones made. I know my days are numbered. Or one of the framed collectibles with a dozen of the flies I created, let me make one for you now. I could definitely use the business. Some of you say I am a legend but I have always considered myself just one of you all. I never sought the limelight nor took advantage of many opportunities I had over my forty seven years of business. Money never really motivated me. Big money at least. Perhaps I made a mistake. The place I find myself in right now seems to indicate that. So what I would like to ask of you all is this. I know my days are very limited and I MUST find a buyer so would everyone please network and if you know of anyone who would be interested in being my successor, please send them my way. I want to meet them before I pass on. The price is very low and the deal is absolutely turnkey. It is listed with a wonderful agent in Lake Placid, Margie Philo who is Adirondack Premiere Properties. Here is a link to see the information. http://www.adkpp.com/?page_id=112 Thank you everyone in advance for any help you can give. Fran

Sounds like Fran is really in rough shape...  I used to swing by his old shop with my neighbor who would take me fishing on the Ausable and on Mirror Lake each summer when I was younger.

He was really good friends with Fran- heck, I would imagine a LOT of people are!

It's a sad plea, but also quite heartfelt.  I will try to get up there late next month during an early brookie foray in that neck of the woods some weekend.  Sounds like Fran is not planning on sticking around for the long haul.

I never knew the story about why he changed shops, the old place grew to be legendary by the time I was fishing up there as a kid in the mid 80s.  The dreams of shop ownership are always fun, but fruitless.

You ever notice there is not ONE bait or fly shop in the town of Indian Lake?  An absolute perfect and central location of the 'Dacks, but four shops have opened and failed immediately.  The season is just too short up there.

The fly shop in Speculator didn't make it more than a year or two either, from the looks of it.  It was for sale and **** down last time I drove by in on my way to Lewey.  I don't think selling fish is the way to get rich.

I think that catching bass on ESPN on Sunday morning is what gets you rich.  BOO-YAH!!!

that, and doing the opposite of what cramer says! boo-yah! agree, I seen alot of (small) bait shops come and go in catskill region too. It is a shame, I even see HD closing some smaller stores here in nnj. These are signs of foreboding times. I'm just going to stay single and fish.

i hear ya, owning a shop or being a guide really cuts into your personal fishing time. sometime folks tell me they would love to be a outdoors guide, but in truth it is really only hard work. the only pleasure out is the clients success.

    speaking of Bass...
while I was out walking the streets of Memphis (scary) I seen a Bass Pro Shop. Had to check it out, never been in one before. Walked in with the credit card , walked out with a small bag of lead sinkers and a few fly material.. It sucks, nothing like a Cabelas..

That is a real heartbreaker about Fran Betters.  I've only met him a couple of times, and he tried to get me to take some casting lessons from him. Now I wish I did it then.
I already knew he was a legend when I walked in to the store. I kind of sheepishly walked up to where he was tying a fly and offered my hand to say hello, kind of similarly how it felt when I met Joe DiMaggio.  He was a very nice guy, stopped what he was doing to chat, we talked some trout. I think he looked like he ate something bad when i asked if had any Rapalas. I ended up buying a box of flies off him even though i didn't flyfish at the time.
I'm with Jimmy- I gotta get up and pay my respects to the man one more time, maybe I'll spring for a big ticket custom rod.  Unfortunately I'm not in the market for a fly shop though.
