new to ny fishing

Hello, I will be up in the schoharie area mid may for a week. Im interested in finding where I can fish, what to fish for up there, and how to go about doing it. Ive never been fishing in ny but did see some fish up near the "breakabeen"sp covered bridge. Any advice?

The Schoharie Creek has a number of dec access areas for fishing, trout will be in season by then, and eyes. Not sure what type of fishing you were looking to do ? It's loaded with smallies too but c&r only till late June. Good luck !

I live in NC used to fishing saltwater, Red Drum, speckled trout, flounder.  I have fished for bass, crappie, brim but for freshwater thats it. Never been freshwater trout fishing except for using corn at some stocked pond, lol. I use spinning rods, not a fly fisherman.

Your shots at Bull Reds are going to be pretty limited in the Schoharie...  But still...

If you toss a small Panther Martin spinner in just about any part of the river you will find a fish of some sort.  Rainbow and Brown Trout on the upper end in the Catskills proper (Art Flick loved the Schoharie and wrote a whole book about the trout in there) and some great Smallies further downstream where it crosses beneath I-90.

Ultralight or light spinning rod.  Six pound test.  Small spinner.

Yellow Panther Martin with silver blade is good anywhere.

It ain't exactly Harkers Island, but there are nice fish to be had.

So i guess eyes are waleyes? what are smallies? How do I find these places that i can park at and walk to the creek and fish? I thought about taking a kayak up there with me but I dont know if i want to carry it 12 hours. I would prefer just to find some good spots on the river. Are there carp in the water?

Here's a PDF map of all the public access easements along the river where you can access and walk the banks.

You can blow it up as big as you want and chart your plan of attach pretty easily.

I am sure the reservoir has carp, but I have never fished it.  The river's slower sections most likely hold them too, since most waters do up here.

Smallies are smallmouth bass.  Fight like crazy and jump like mad.

That map was great but not in the area where I will be. I will be north of there. Middleburgh, schoharie, I have been down to breakabeen before and mine kill, but nothing south.
