PeePeePond

Don't know if anyone would be interested, but I'm going to give PeePeePond a try on Thursday.  Could meet at Northway Rest Area just across Hudson River going North(between Exits 17 & 18 of the Northway) at rest stop around 7am and go from there.  High Thursday in that area will be 32 with little wind and I wanted to give it one more shot before season ends.  We could pick up bait at Crossroads or bring bait with you.  I have a small car, so limited room for one; but do have a power auger, ice sled, etc that fit in back seat of car.

OK no takers for trip today, so I went alone.  Fished from 7:15am until 11:15am and got four pike and lost a few others.  But not listed as fish in the pond are largemouth bass and that is when I got THE ONE - 31" and over 7 1/2lbs.  Of course I don't have a digital camera, but do have a regular camera and will post pictures when they get developed.  I just couldn't believe how big this largemouth was or how shallow water he inhabited.  This largemouth took a 9" sucker and gave me quite a battle.
Two pike that I lost at the hole were also hugh, but of the four I landed only one was over thirty inches (31") and the others were between 24-28".  Took Jimmy's friends advice and fished in only 3-4' of water and ran out of bait.
Could have caught 300 dink perch jigging, but got tired fishing for them.  Now I know why they stock muskies in there to get rid of the over abundance of small perch.  Probably be a good idea to use those dink perch for bait next year through the ice.
Great day and not a soul on the ice.  However, it was quite slippery and the wind was wicked for the first couple hours including a couple snow squaws.

    That's awesome Ed!

The state species listings for "fish present" are way off on a lot of lakes...  Pee Pee is probably the worst represented of the bunch...  A lot of maps and documents won't even list Pike or Tigers in Pee Pee- but obviously they are there and they are huge.

You make me feel a lot better about having set up my gear in such shallow water.  I didn't have a legitimate flag all day while we were up there, but I was confident as hell in where I had set up.

For the record, I had a little perch swimming on a line too :)

Great job man- and what a MONSTER bass!  I guess only the strong survive in that little puddle, since there are fish pushing 50" in there that sure eat a lot of food!

Cripes- now I am wondering if I can get back up there one more time before I need the canoe!

Awesome job, glad you made it up there...  Pretty place and fun fishery...

That's why it is kept 'under wraps'...  It's a good one, though we had such limited success two weeks back...

Each trip there gives an angler the chance to catch the fish of a lifetime.

good to hear you made it up and had success in such a short time fishing. we had 30 lines in and did not ice a fish   . Last night I thought long and hard about blowing off work today to join you but just could not do it  . It is a great place and across and over the mountain is prime brookie waters.
i'm sure I don't need to say but I will remind folks. Places like that are truly special and their locations MUST be kept off a public forum. The internet is a good resource and place to share information but it also can easily spoil such places and ruin the experience we love to enjoy.

Thanks Ed and can't wait to see pic's...
    P.S.
Your next step is to buy a digital camera, they are the best thing since sliced bread. you can take hundreds of pics , see right away what they are and develop them at home.

    Tuna:

The ice was about 3' thick and the temperature was around 11 with a 25 MPH wind when I got there at 7:15am.  However, the going is really slick all over the lake, so creepers are a necessity.  I had my insulated chest waders with my titanium spikes in the bottoms and they worked out fine.
Road in was a little shakey from the check-in booth in, but not a soul around except for a guy hiking the trail.  By the way - my wife has a digital camera, but I decided to not take it.

Hey Ed, sorry I missed your PM about PeePee, but I was in Cincinnati visiting my brother for the past week. Just got back yesterday. Glad you had some good luck up there. I was definitely encouraged by the action we had a couple of weeks ago and sure wish we could have iced a fish or two. I am defintely hanging up the creepers for this year. Very little snow and warmer temps means the landscaping season can't be far off for me. Good luck to anyone who gets a chance to return there this season and hopefully I will have time for some open water fishing this year.

... and a solid jab from Ed...  Nice!

I, for one, have never been in any fishing contest in my life...

But I am surely guilty of standing around campfires eating and drinking with my fishing buddies...

I think it's awesome you had a good time.  Sounds like a lot of ice north of Schroon yet...  More than I would like to drill thru with my tiny and dull auger.  Imagine the fun it would be trying to coax a 40" northern up a hole that is five inches wide and three feet long.

It would be like packing a snake in a garden hose.

So perhaps my dreams of a weekend overnighter are still alive.  Late March or something. When the ice is thinner, or someone drags out the gas auger.  Ah-hmmm....

     Who knows...

But if my lake is thawed out and my boat is running true, all bets are off.  I might not leave my place until the leaves change color in October.  But you guys can still come stand around my campfire and eat and drink

EAGLE ED---  31" bass???? Were you into the hemp or what? That's more like a 12- pounder man...  unreal for a northern bass.   Congrats buddy, fish of two lifetimes! Lets see the pic and I hope you don't have that moth-eaten Eagles coat on.

I've heard Bass go crazy for hemp...

But personally, I know nothing about it...

Trout?  That's a whole 'nother story altogether.  Two weeks and trout are in season, but I bet it will be a month before I can target any northern brookies or ice-out pike (accidentally, of course) on the fly..

Browns in the Kinderhook are probably my Opening Day distraction, followed by a week or two of harrassing the little turds on the Wynantskill.  But Perch- I'd like to hit the Poestenkill sometime when the water comes down?

Yank:  I think Ed must think his Eagles Jacket is a lucky charm or something, even though he seldom catches anything other than cold.  I can vouch for the fact that he does have other jackets.  From what I understand though, the Eagles don't have very many jackets produced because Eagles memorablia doesn't sell very well--happens with teams that choke.

Just so you know the pike, musky season ended March 15th.  I fished across from the boat launch and to the left of the point that goes back into a cove.  I was out about 40 yds from the shoreline and punched holes across the entrance to that cove/bay.
Plenty of dink perch all over the place, but not sure they get any bigger.

Of course its just blitz and I going, I have not told another soul about this place.  Just looking for a few nice fish to close out the ice season with.  A tent and small fire at night, thats it.   Thanks for the advice eagle, thats right where blitz lost a very very hefty fish two weeks back.

OK you guys, but it was the best picture I could get by taking it with my hand held camera.  Also, it will still be there when you go camping up there Jimmy and you know that Pond better than I.  Of course if I go back I'm going to fish the cove to the right of the beach/boat launch area back by the beaver hut.  That looks like a great area for that bass to haunt once July/August rolls around.
