    Chapstick
    Vasaline
    Cooking spray
    WD-40
    Gun oil

All these work, but the easiest and most effective is cooking spray.

You want to help it? Try water.

If you want to keep it from icing up, many use chapstick, vaseline, other oil-based products.

Have you ever been on a real shrimpn' boat? No, but I've been on a real big boat!

I would think any oil based lube would hurt any line! Cooking spray...Probably not as much if any!

I know its only a small amount, but WD-40?  Its petroleum based. Won't it to some extent add to the pollution of the water? I prefer "hanes spray". It is an industrial food grade lubricant. Not sure where you can buy it I always borrow some from work. Its pretty much cooking spray.

Every time I hear WD-40 recommended, I cringe.  Not only is it a pollutant as was mentioned, but it is a solvent and will most certainly harm your rod and line.  Neither will fall apart immediately upon application, but eventually, it will cause damage.  Stick to chapstick or cooking oil to avoid both of these issues.

    WD40 is NOT toxic.
    Do some research don't assume.

WD-40's main ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:

The German version of the mandatory EU safety sheet lists the following safety relevant ingredients:

It further lists flammability and effects to the human skin when repeatedly exposed to WD-40 as risks when using WD-40. Nitrile rubber gloves and safety glasses should be used. Water is unsuitable for extinguishing burning WD-40.
