Daughters First Steelhead

Hi All,

I decided to take a risk and take my 8 yr old daughter steelhead fishing.  I was worried it would be too cold, too rainy, creek too high, too many people, etc....well I just decided to do it, and the attached pictures are the result.  It was a perfect day.  We only stayed about 4 hours, but it was plenty enough to get the desired results.  This is something she and I will remember forever.

I taught her to cast an eleven foot noodle rod (she's almost 4 ft), and to use a new type reel (spinning).  Her first two casts were about a foot from shore but the third cast was right down the center of the stream.  I explained the night before on what a drift was, and how to keep her line tight, and it was amazing how she remembered.  She was watching her float, and down it went...she set the hook and the fight was on.  She would get the Steelhead close to shore and it would run on her and she ploclaimed "It keeps taking the bobber down"!  I finally netted the fish and she was so excited.  "I can't believe I caaught this huge fish all by myself!"  I was very proud and giggling at her enthusiasm.  I hope all the fisherman around got the same charge I did.

Thanks to the guy next to me for being so understanding....

My brother & I were just below you & I mentioned to him how that little girl was handling the spinning rod. Enjoyed seeing a small one having fun. Missed her landing the fish tho. Would have loved to see that ! Great job.    Dave

That put a HUGE smile on my face this evening.  Thanks for sharing that special moment.  Of course you have spoiled her.  That is VERY nice steelie.  She will expect all of them will be that big....

That's one nice fish and one GIANT smile! Good for her...great for you. My boy caught his first good fish when he was 8. It was a 10lb carp at Tamarak. He still talks about that fish. He's 11 now and sets a hook like Bill Dance. He's landed numerous good fish since then, of all species, including a fat chromer...and he still talks about that carp. Good for you Dad for gettin' her out. Frame those pics.

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...

I think I remember who you were...green jacket?  I think you left just before we did.  We left just before the rains came.  She was getting cold and tired when you came up, after all she did land 6 fish, lol.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Great pics and story!  You should blow up the one of your daughter holding the steelie, and get a nice frame.

    Tex,
Fantastic!  She landed 6?  That's a good day by anybody's standards.  Hope you went to Poor Richards to get her a 1st fish certificate.  That and a picture on the wall will be a permanent reminder of the day.

    OP...

You inspire me.  My little girl is 8 as well, she ties flies with me and one day I hope to get her on the stream.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I wish I had known about the First fish certificate, so no I didn't.    She only landed that first one on her own, the other five I hooked and she reeled in.  (When she got tired\cold and took breaks I was able to fish for a few minutes)  She did have a couple others on that she lost after fighting for a few minutes, she didn't get a good hook set on those.  One in particular was a huge hen that was pretty fresh.

Tex, you made my day by bringing back memories of my grown boys and I believe you made a fishergirl for life.
When you get kids away from the video games and into the woods and waters they experience
    a whole new, wonderful, world.
    Way to go, Dad!
