I've heard several people talking about these things, but only on this board.  What the heck are they, and can you fish for them from shore with any possibility of success?  If it can be done, I'd like to give it a try, but I have no idea even what they are.

They r caught in the channel certain times of year. They are a big, strong, uglyy fish. A board member named presque isle angler could answer your questions. I think it's a little late in the year...could be wrong though.

Burbot are like freshwater cod, they live deep in the lake til winter. Then they come in to shallow water to spawn. You can catch them when conditions are cold and miserable from shore with shiners.

Found pictures of these this from several different areas on the net.

Do people eat them?  Just curious.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

    poor man's lobster

    A quote from a Maine native :

"Nancy Knowles knows how it was, too. Back in the 1940s, she says, the family ran around the house getting all the lobster shells out of sight when company was coming. You wouldn't want guests to know you were so poor you had to eat lobster. "

So burbot is poor man's poor man's food.

Who leaves lobster shells laying around the house?  That's gotta make for one hellacious reek.

Anyone actually catch one of these things?  If they're not terribly hard to catch, I might try for them the next time I come up.  I seem to cause Erie's weather to crap all over the area every time I come up.  Either that or it's just always bad...
