LITTER 7 MILE CREEK

Took my son to 7 mile to check it out for future fishing. Picked up a broken fishing pole, several bait wrappers down at the hole. In the parking area (which the nuns pay to have their plow guy clean), along side the road, I saw a plastic shopping bag (filled with fish guts), several lure containers, pop cans and many coffee cups (thrown in the bushes beside the road). Disposed of the fish guts (wife gave me hell) and some of the trash. We all scream about the trash and recognize the danger of loosing land to slobs. My question would be for the steelhead association (or one of the many other fine groups), could someone put up a small barrel (even print your name on it) close to the parking area? I'm sure the nuns wouldn't object and someone may even use it once in a while. I would have no problem emptying it.

all the state game lands use to have garbage barrels in the parking lots, people started dropping off couches, appliances, and trash bags because they don't have garbage pick up.  Its a good idea, unfortunatly people abuse it.

Always a "next ***" out there looking for another way to get something at someone elses expense. Sad but true.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

but is tossing the extra trash worth keeping the place open?  A club I belong to decided it was, and for the cost of a dumpster at the clubhouse per month, we can leave a can out at access areas and empty it regularly, it has helped.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Krafish,      Good Idea , You should give it a try, put a can out there, especially if you have the time and resources for getting rid of it. I am sure it would be much appreciated by the Nuns and others. I would ask first of course for permission. And for your efforts I am sure the Nuns won't ever mind you being there enjoying the fishing. Even if they post it someday which sounds likely.

    Krafish,
Why wait for someone to "donate" a barrel. If your serious about what your saying....buy a can. I'm not being a smart *ss...you can buy a good can at Lowes for 20$. You can buy a NICE can with wheels for about 35$. Chain it up though! Good luck with it.

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...
    I choose Little Cleos

RE: LITTER 7 MILE CREEK 2008/12/03 19:01:06 (permalink)
I used to fish there quite a bit, and always cleaned up the parking area.
I've only been there 3 times this year, and only actually fished twice.

I think you are preaching to the choir here, as I've posted on this same subject a couple times. I think most of the offenders are one timers from
out of town, like Monday, when the other creeks were high. There were
5 cars there, as I drove by. Where 5 carloads were fishing is beyond me.
There are maybe 10 yards of fish holding water on the whole creek.

Anyway, to answer your question, I don't think it would be proper to leave
a trash can on someone else's land. And it probably wouldn't be used by the offenders anyway.  I've picked up trash and line at 12 mile
within 10 feet of the trash cans there. Some are just slobs, and will never
change. The guys who will use the cans will take their trash with them.

This used to be the least littered spot anywhere, because of the locals
policing it. Since the creek is rarely fished by the locals anymore,
the mupere's trash is left behind.  I still stop occasionally at the parking area, and pick up trash, but don't get on the creek much.

BTW, How can you be sure the sisters wouldn't object?
I think they might. A can would not be a good idea, because people passing by would throw stuff near it, of course missing, defeating the purpose. Also, would be a hazard for the guy plowing, and he would probably remove it.

IMO, well intentioned, but not a good idea.

Pete ,   I think we've had the trash discussion before and I am not from Erie, and I don't leave my trash on the banks. Slobs are slobs and Erie has it's share on the tribs also,  Just like the ones who come from afar.

They had to be out of towners as they were way to orvis looking ..most of the local flyguys still have enough redneck in them you can tell the locals from the out of towners.

It is inevitable that all the tribs will be posted in the future. For some reason alot of fisherman do not get it. I wonder if there neighbor dropped garbage on their lawn how long they would stand for it. It's a real shame but fishing in Erie is getting to be like fishing on opening day every day.

I have seen many a flyguy litter, and many a baitguy litter. No matter what, littering isn't about what pole you use or where your from, it's about what kind of respect you have for the land your on and the people that own it.

Everyone knows fly guys don't litter like center pinners or spin fisherman. Although most fly guys are catch and release whinners. Remember it's not the fishing rod that litters, it's the person. I once watch tippee-toe through about 10 cig butts into Walnut after chain smoking. He had a flyrod.

Lets keep all the trash in the cans and not on this board. This thread seems to be going from picking up the litter to bashing.

I love that little creek and will take it upon myself to help keep it clean. Good thread Krafish.

Keep your eyes out for a big blue van with NY plates. They are snaggers and they were spotted the other day at 7 mile. The fellow that told me saw it himself but did not have officer Ed's number. He has it now.

I think it is clear and just common sense that the sisters should be contacted for permission before anything is added to their property, regardless of how good the intentions are.  I have to say God Bless them and their organization, and they deserve alot of props for keeping that area open with all the crap that goes on down there.  I know I owned that property, it would be posted tommorow.

Yeah, ask the sisters, if they dont mind, put a can there.  If the local decent folks dont mind changing it out now and then, maybe this could be an idea for many a parking areas.  If a local wants to get in F&S or OL for the Heroes of Conservation, this would be an excellent project.

I maintain that cigar butts are vegetation and as such do not meet the criteria of littering.   Just like someone tossing an apple core in the woods.

first of all i am offended that you blame all the littering on the "muperes" i travel 3 hours to fish these waters and have never left any trash behind just look in my truck after a fishing trip it will be proven !!!!!!!!!!!
also i have witnesses dozens of "locals" depositing their trash along the stream so if your gonna bash out-of-towners take a step back and start pointing fingers at your neighbors as well!!!!!!!!!!
