Dead lake Erie King

Just thought I'd share, I found a rare King salmon in a Lake Erie trib yesterday. Unfortunately it was dead. Not from spawning, something killed it before it had a chance to spawn. It was only about 8lbs, maybe 9.

None that I seen. It was a little discolored from being dead for a while. It was sunk to the bottom of an eddy. Facing right at me with it's mouth open. I noticed the color so I drug it out to take a closer look.

The stream that I was on was very low previously but fish had been moving up it. It rose a little the last day or two. I think this crazy fish probably beached it self on it's way upstream and died. Then was washed back down with the slight increase in water flow. Who knows, could have been anything that killed it.  Could have been hooked and fought to long by someone.

I havent had any experience with salmon...so how can you tell it apart from any other salmon or steelhead?  To my untrained eye, it looks slightly different from a steelie, but I cant quite put my finger on how.

The easiest is the black inside the mouth.  But also the long anal fin, the fin in front of the tail. See how many "rays there are on it. If you were to take your hand and push the front of the fin back, it would not extend to the back of that fin.  A trout, or even a coho fin, doesn't have as many rays, so when you bend than front ray back, it covers the entire length of that fin.

dark inside of mouth is easiest way to determind salmon vs. trout.

it doesnt show any signs of too low dissolved oxygen or too low/high pH....so, my guess would be either like previously mentioned, either beached earlier in the week(which i would think that wouldnt be the case) or an angler played it too long or killed it when they caught it or something..its really hard to say without any clear reason of death...i did notice the little "boil" near its tail...is that infection or is that something in the picture?

I didn't notice the boil near the tail until you said something, I have no idea what that is.

It's not as unlikely as you might think for them to beach themselves when moving upstream.  If you'd have seen the fish movement on this particular stream the other day, it was very likely that  is what happened.

if the boil is just the external showings of something bad on the internal, it could just be a sick salmon....never really saw/heard about them beaching themselves...but then again, i've all kinds of different fish do that and thay're not scrambling up a small stream.....good catch on the other thread though..pretty fish...cant wait to get mine.

To elaborate a bit more about kings beaching themselves.  I put one back in the stream on Elk once and it jumped back onto shore.  I tried again, and she did it again!!  Hell with it.  Suicidal crazy beeoch.

Jeb once again you are wrong.. Kings have black mouth black gums, cohos have black mouth white gums. the farthest most front part of the upper mouth on a coho is always white but it lower mouth can at times be super black but it gums wll always be white. now a king is like all black inside upper mouth and all. PA's coho we had in the past did not get as black a mouth as the one from NY ontario tribs do.
