Atlantics ?

This might have been discused B4, maybe even by me, I can't remeber.
Has the PAFBC ever considered stocking Atlantics in Erie?
I know the whole steelhead vs salmon stocking debate, steelies are better finacially, because they seem to think they will survive their fisrt run and comeback another year.
But the chance to catch an Atlantic would be awesome ! I know there are few in L.Ontario and in Raystown here in Pa, but what about a catchable population in Erie?

I didn't know there were Landlocked Atlantics in Raystown. I'm sure they are very few and far between but how did they get there? I assume they were stocked years ago and still remain. Or do they still stock them along with the Stripers?

back before the industrial reveloution the native salmon to lake ontario was the atlantic, and they had quite a population the atlantic salmon is a lot more touchy, back home in my native new england they have been trying to establish a run since the 1960s,in a particular river i grew up fishing, only in the last few years is there a limited and i mean LIMITED returning spawning population to this river a tributary of the mighty ct river, back in colonial times the settlers actually pitched forked them out of the rivers of new england thats how plenty there were, but we put an end to that.so it is special to catch one now, i really dont think it would be feasable to try them in lake erie though, but who knows what the pafbc would try, probably chum salmon next lol lol

I may have dreamed this BUT. . .I recall that the landlocked atlantics were drop stocked in Raystown in the late 70's.  I have no proof source to cite.  That is what I remember!

I have a place on Raystown and they were there in 1980 as I caught one in lake near breast of dam and also another in tailraces that year. I haven*t heard of any being caught since mid 1980*s in Raystown lake.
Smithton Sportsman tried by putting the in the Yough one yearback in 1980*s also. I never heard of anyone catching one in the Yough when they were stocked back then. I think They all ran down the Yough and then the monongahela and into the Ohio never to return.

They are raising them now and will be released into the lake next year. If all goes well we should see keepers on our lines in 2010.

I thought there were also Landlocked Atlantics in the Yough Lake, but I'm not sure on that at all.  I don't fish that lake or claim to know anything about the history of it.  I'm not even sure where I heard that there were Atlantics in there.  I know there are some big browns in that lake though.

Seems to me that they were put in Keystone Res in Armstrong County.  I remember some adult saying something about it when I was a kid.

They stocked 15,000 cohos in Lake marburg, york county in 1995. (when they discontinued stocking them in Erie tribs)I don't know that anyone ever caught one. Where did they go?

Just to play devil's advocate...  Perhaps he had every intention of turning the fish loose and when he did it went belly up.  As a result, he had to keep a fish that he really would have rather seen go back into the fishery.  That could be the reason he is pi$$ed...

I have been fortunate, being from upstate NY to have landed several hundred Landlocks.  They are much more aggressive in the open lake than in the streams, but they are a lot of fun to fly fish for in October when they make their spawning runs. They do fight hard no doubt, but I am not sure they fight any harder than a healthy king or Steelhead pound for pound.  They are very good eating with a mild flesh, and definitely better than steelies.

5 years ago I boated a atlantic salmon off the mountain in Northeast . At least I thought it was . It was all silver, small blue cicles on the back and tail, with a black tough, flat tail .I have caught cohoes, kings and lake trout. Could of been a cross bread . It was about 26in long . It did not have rows of teeth like a coho , more like steel head mouth.

Browns in the lake look extremely similar to a an Atlantic.  I don't have the pic on my computer but the first trophy brown I landed in the tribs was almost pure silver.  Was just starting to get some colors.

Bowines have a flat tail, Atlantics are curved inwards.
