Golfing

Gentlemen,
Can anybody recommend a good Golf Course in the Erie area that might still be open right before the one fly?  My  grandson wants to bring his clubs along and try to get 18 holes in.  Quote:  "Pappy, I love fishing, but I really like golf."  Nuff said?   You can pm me with ideas/suggestions.

Nah,  he has the ability to hit just about any shot he needs but he is taken to flights of fancy where he will play an entire hole with a seven iron, or hit a three wood out of a fairway bunker.  When he concentrates he's amazing for a kid.  When he's goofing off he's a typical kid.

You could make quick work of Gospel Hills near Behrend Colllege. Not far from I-90. Par 70 where the front nine is realativley short and easy scoring.
The back nine is longer w/3 par 5's but also has a few easy holes.
It's been a while since I golfed in Erie but I can't imagine any easier 18 hole courses.

Are you going to stay the weekend? If you are and are also planning on going to the big run at shades beach in harborcreek Green Meadows is a good one, not too far from shades in North east. Take rt 5 east from shades and look for Brickyard on the right, its a few miles from shades, maybe 6 miles or so.

Indsguiz...There is a great little golf course located right next to the erie zoo. Its called the JC Martin golf course and I think it would suit you and your grandson well...It's a 9 hole course with a par 31, so if your grandson still wants to get in 18 after playing the "front 9" it is very well possible. Plus it is very inexpensive...6$ to play 9 holes, 8$ with a cart or 18 holes, and 12$ will allow you to play all day. With that being said, do not expect country club conditions...its a public course. Its located right off state street on rt 90...I think if you type in "Golf Courses in Erie" on Google maps, it will show you exactly where to go....hope this helps

Elk Valley - right down the road from Folly's.

More expensive- Whispering Woods, very nice-  on Grubb Rd.
right behind Walnut Creek Middle School. Off Sterratania Rd.

Closer to Girard- Overlake. I don't think it is worth the price. Fairly nice course.

Best for the price- Elk Valley.

Didn't see his age or ability. Gospel Hill would be more suited to him.

The front nine is short, and if he is not playing too well could play it twice.
They are pretty easy going there. The back nine has 3 long par 5's,
and a long par 4. He could play red tees though.

Gospel Hill is just north of Penn State Behrend - go east on 90,
take 430 -Wesleyville exit, left at ramp, go about a mile, take a right to stay on 430(Station Rd.),  go about a mile, turn right at Reese Rd. , take first right to course. If you get to Cooper, or Saltsman Rd., you went too far on  430.

You can Google to get directions.

it's all in your attitude towards the game, Skyler
I find that I enjoy the game SOOOO much better now that I don't put pressure on myself.
I golf to "have fun" now.
My "frustration factor" went way down and my scores actually improved when I took that attitude

so now when you batting the balls around from one side of the rough to the other,
or blasting a worm burner with driver that rips thru the grass 30 yards and stops short of the lady's tee ,
look at it as "getting your money's worth" in club swings...

you want to stay on the west side, right.

the millcreek course is close to the airport and is a fairly nice place. downside, only 9 holes.

wispering woods is by far the best public course around, and the most difficult.  i would not recomend it for beginners or high handicappers.

elk valley is great (kinda wide open, good prices, OK conditions).

    overlake, over-rated.

jc martin, waste of time, too many kids.

i would take him to the millcreek course.

Play right in the creeks themselves. There is no water to worry about.

Of the courses mentioned I would recommend Millcreek Golf Club or Elk Valley. Crab Apple Ridge is also a very good course that is up Peach Street if you're going south. Although Millcreek is only 9-holes, you can always play it twice. It's a nice little course.

What's the name of the new course that's behind the Presque Isle Comfort Inn at the Sterrettania exit?  And what course is close to Girard on, I think, 20?  I prefe something lose to The Green Roof Inn if I can find it.

The course you see from 90 is Beechwood. It's ok, nothing special. But it is cheap. The problem is getting past first 3 holes, which parallel 90. The noise is deafening.  Worth a try though. Going south on Sterratania, it is the first road past 90 on the left, immediately. Don't go too fast or you'll miss it. They also have a restaraunt bar there.

It's not that new- maybe 6,7 years.

The only new course is Whispering Woods. Halfway down Sterratania.
On Grubb Rd.   Save that for when he is 18 or so.

The one near Girard is probably Overlake.

The ones closest to Walnut are private - Lake Shore, and Kahkwa.

I still recommend Elk Valley. It's right on the road that runs right into
    Folley's.   Van Camp?
