Shades Beach launch

Just wondering if they resolved some of the issues at the Shades boat launch. This spring I read reports here of the launches being too shallow, poor dredging maintenance, and boat hazards.  Any experiences or tips to share when using this launch would be appreciated.

I make it up to Erie about 5 or 6 times a year, mostly for smallmouth in the spring and fall.  Usually I launch from Northeast Marina but would like the change of scenery Shades would offer.

Thanks,
Jerry

Launched out of there on 8-30.  Had the motor trimmed all the way up and still hit the skeg twice in the marina.  Had no problems once out in the lake though.

Fished there most of the summer. Its shallow in the marina. 2-3 feet in spots mostly 3-4 feet. I have small 16 foot boat, short trailer , and i blow exhaust bubbles every time i put in and take out. Very close to putting 4 car tires in water . I said it before and ill say it again. im sure glad its there and ill manage every time i go but i dont like the design. Who ever designed the marina is not a boater and does not fish. Thats just my opinion. And yes i think i could have put my 2 cents in to make it better.but no one asked me.

Thanks for the all the feedback.  It is a shame they spent that much money and didn't get it right.  Probably not much they could do now with the shallow launches.

I will probably try it myself to see how much trouble I have launching / loading.

Actually they built it with considerable foresight.  Since Global warming is going to occur and the levels of the great lakes are going to rise 2-3 feet then the launch will be perfect.

I was told that this year they will dredge it down to the shale so next boating season it will be deeper. They were told it should be dredged to the shale but did not have the money to cover that so they dredged it only part way down & the first time the creek next to it got high it filled right up with leaves. I saw a fellow with a 21' cabin cruiser launch out of there quite a few times this summer.

Hope they get it right next year. It sure it nice looking.

D.T.,  Where exactly are you hitting bottom?  At the launch itself or between the launch and the lake?  Was thinking about launching there this weekend.

I hit near the end of the 1st dock and about half way between the outlet and the dock.  You don't want to launch there with any kind of wave action on the lake cause it's only about 3' deep once you exit the basin and make the left to the lake.  2-3' waves and you're gonna bottom out in the lake.

Right at the entrance to the lake bogey its less than 2 feet their was a fella their that said stay to the left as you go out and to the right as you come in but thats heresay. My best advice would be launch at north east shorter ride to the fish there hangin in deep water 75 to 100 feet and a much better and no worrys launch. A few more miles driving but cheaper in the long run D.T.

Thanks Trout and D.T...I usually launch at North East and head NW, but have been hearing reports of decent catches just off Shades.  North East has been feast or famine the last few weeks, but the size has been great.  The perching has been hot too.
