SR report 9-2

Well my wife and I hit the river against Slayers judgement...(sorry dude). We ended up hooking 18 between us landing none of them. Fished from the pickle factory up to the firemens lot. Mid morning was the best time, basically it all ended by lunch time thanks to the big orange ball in the sky I believe. One king that looked like it was pushing 30#'s gave us a 20 minute battle with jumps and screaming runs, then it finally had enough of us just prior to landing it, turned around, and shot off snapping the 14# test like he could have done it at anytime. Slayer I know you think these early fish can't fight but man they sure are strong. Oh yeah, my wife did hook more than me, I had to say that to keep the peace.

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

What were you using? 18 hookups in one day?

Slayer speaks truff. Put the iron to them. 10 minutes if the fish has the hook in its gullet, double it if it isn't.

Co- Sounds like it was worth the trip and you had a fun time. Thanks for the posting. It's funny how the fish can vanish once the sun comes up. Early morning and late evening are my favorite times... The earlier in the season, the better tasting the fish are. Once they have been in the river for a while they tast like seaweed/mud. I know people  who would never eat Salmon again because they kept October fish. The fish they had were clean and not too dark either. I caught fish in late Aug./early Sept. and cooked it for them. They couldn't believe the tatse of the fish. What a difference. Getting kings out of the lake from deep water in the ealry summer/spring are the best!

Hill it ain't only the time of year that makes them taste like crud. Any fish that has been in this upper 70-80 degree water for more than a day has mushy flesh and is worthless in my book.

Wader, VERY true! I should have clariffied "COLD deep water".

Same thing with catfish, perch and suckers for that matter. One of my favorites is yellow perch thru the ice.

We hooked them on black leech and a green/silver combo in the fast water. I know 18 sounds like alot but that was from sun up till 4:oo, and alot of casting into holes. Sight fishing was useless, every fish I saw was turboing past me. The black pattern was tops however, while watching a couple shoot past, one shot up out of the water with the fly in its jaw thats when i knew i had one on....(had is the key word here). The water temp in the morning was 66, and I know what your saying I have hooked them in the 70 range and they rolled over quick, but Tuesday was different. I'll be up again Sunday for revenge unless my house floats away from Hanna.

Cool. Black is about the only color I haven't covered besides purple.
Maybe I have more tying to do....
Thanks for the report. That's a long day of fishing for sure.

You want to speed up your tying? I use crafting pipe cleaners in a array of colors. They should look like a scud pattern when you are done. My wife caught and released 2 domestic rainbows on them and they almost swallowed them. The blue tinsel was killer on steelhead last fall.

Very cool. I've heard that before. I hear about blue being a great color & I believe it, but I've fished all sorts of Blue flies only to end up having to go to another color to catch fish. Maybe it's a confidence thing?
