Swinger or Drifter?

Hey guys, i was wondering what you guy's thought was a better technique on the salmon river, dead drifting or swinging flies.  This is reguarding salmon fishing.  Thanks for any responses.

Dead drifting would get my nod for numbers. Fishing smaller resting pockets that are realy to small for swinging produces some great action. That said I swing as much as I dead drift because I enjoy it more. I just have to pick my spots accordingly. In truth I don't really fish for salmon much anymore. Mostly fish around them looking for steel. No action and I will fish to the salmon after a while but I don't go out targeting them.

I will have to agree wader, i tend to drift mostly for the chrome also.  I have little experience as far as salmon go.  It seems to me that the two must be fished completely different from one another.  I know you can catch all species on some presentations, but i would like to tangle with some salmon especially.

I fish for both pretty much the way I do when nymphing for Trout.
Dead drift & keep drag out of the equation as much as possible.
For a pod of holding Salmon that haven't been chased around it sometimes pays to swing streamers. I had my best day ever doing that.
Just my observation. I'm no expert by any means.

Anything big, bright, and fluffy should work.A friend of mine ties simple flies out of tinsel/flash material---they work well.

The first fly I had regular success with for kings was called the Alaskan Flashabou. Bright red marabou tail, Flo red chenile body and a crap load of siler mylar for the hackle collar. Tied on a heavy wire #2 hook they either fled in terror or hammered it. Fished well either high sticking it in pockets or swinging in bigger holes.

WB- got a pic. of this beast you can give me?

These are my fav's. Dawn told me they were the bomb on my first trip up there & she was right.

I also make up a double bunny up. Orange over cream. It's a **** good fly too. Sometimes I add a little flash to it, but just a hint.
One more midnight & I'm off till Wed.
Almost time to get some tying done!

Salmo I am picture posting illiterate. Even if I had a digital camera I won't know how to post the pics on the tubes.

Just picture the tail and body like a woolybugger. Tie in a goodly amount of falshabou at the throat before you wrap the body so the chenile covers the tie in. Now instead of palmering a hackle just spread the bou aropund the shank. Use the whip finish knot to angle the bou back toward the body and finish. Take the back edge of your scissors and scrape the bou with them making it curl adding motion and flash when fished.

Hands down comets are now my go to fly if I decide to fish for salmon. I like red tail with copper body and red hackle myself. Also big chartruse streamers work well for me. Can't figure why they work but I get no action to chartruse comets.

I don't do well with chart. comets either. It's the one fly a Salmon will move away from as it goes by, or freak out.
Orange & black followed by gold & black are my favs..

I've never used red in my flies- maybe it's time I start to add some of that to the mix?
I think I have some red marabou around.

    Thanks for the fly info..

When you talk of swinging... are you "swinging" the flys down stream in front of the fish or a pod of salmon trying to entice them to "bite"

    Yes

The red comets  were exceptional for lower river coho. The chartruse streamers and flashabous for kings.

Yes px, swinging the fly to a pod of holding fish would be my thoughts, but I may be wrong. Casting 45 degrees, let it sink, then swing it so the fly rises up. Then a few strips. Take a few steps up or down stream and do it all over again. Thanks for the fly recipe and ideas guys. I am really excited to try it out. I have pretty much conquered the steel heads, this is a new frontier for me. Last time I had a king on, was twelve years ago, and a friend had me lifting themall I remember was running as fast as I could to keep up with the fish, and getting baptized by the SR numerous times.Lmoa! Nothing in the world like that fight.

Don't forget the hang down at the end of the swing. I have taken many salmon off of  the toes of anglers downstream.

I've never had that happen with a Salmon, but it's worth a try. Trout do it often.
Pluggers are basically doing this to work up a strike the whole way down the river. Right?

Sorta but whereas pluggers are basicaly forcing fish downriver until they either strike or run away with the hang down you are giving a fish that has followed your fly around a time to decide to take it. Also any fish lying towards the soft water edge get a good look and a chance to grab.

Correct.. One I first started fly fihing for samlon we had the priviledge of being invited by a company we were going to by machines from to a few guided trips. This really helped understand, salmon, fly fihing and presentation. The one thing my guide stressed was MEND...MEND...and more MEND.. Oh and keeping your elbow up. The next morning was worse than a day at the gym.So, as i drift past salmon and I'm ready to re cast I continue the mending process by habit keeping the fly in a natural drift so to speak. and I get lucky on occasion.

Just got in from the fly shop.
Got some more hooks & some bunny strips because I wasn't sure what I have.
I got some of those Daiichi X-Factor glow bug hooks. Like 8 bucks for a 25 pack. Sweet Jeebus- I won't be bottom bouncing with those bastages!

here is a pretty sweet fly to swing to salmon. Bunny Fly, once wet it has all the action and sinks very well.

here is also a link to some very good ties, some of the tiers you may know:

Are they open yet? In spite of the dumb move posting that clip out back last year it's still my fav. place to go.

That is a great looking fly. And a great link, thanks again. Do the bright colors beat out the natural colors in you guys opinion. For salmon that is? I fished next to guy that was using dull colors like blue and green, they were estaz flies, and the cohos loved them, especially the silver ones.
