Which battery to get

I need a new one and was wondering if I could get a trolling battery that will also start the motor.
And which make is better. Thanks.     it will be starting a 9.9.

You should not use a trolling motor battery as a start battery. Can do harm to the electronics of the engine. I use Walmart batteries. My start and trolling moyor batteries are going on 6 yrs.old. I keep them od 1 1/2 amp battery maintainers year round. Keeps them in good shape. Also check water every so often.

They do make combo batteries. I recommend staying with a sealed type of battery, I have had issues in boats with battery acid getting out of standard type batteries. Not sure I'd spend the big bucks on the Optima but they are good batteries...

Dog, i've been using the optimas for a while now so i'll tell you about them. They are great batteries for the first 2 years. After that, they're junk. And the warrenty even lets you know that by pro-rating them for the 3rd year of their warrenty. I've had nothing but trouble with mine lately and they're not even 3 years old. Wont take a complete charge anymore. Took them back to autozone where i purchased them, to replace them, and the pro-rated amount they'll give me is $18. On a less than 3 year old battery that cost me close to $200. $18 off of a new one. And that includes the core charge too. Just doesn't seem right to me. John, i'm looking for a couple new batteries too, so let me know which brand you find is best.

I've had good luck with Interstate Marine, but the warranty isn't what it used to be. (was "lifetime", but now it's 2yr I think)
I would recommend, at minimum, a group 27...spring for the group 31 if you got the extra change. I was not happy with the group 24 I had...it really seemed to drain fast.

I have a buddy that really likes the Deka marine batteries, but I haven't tried one yet. (will probably be the next one I buy)

Here's a link with some good battery info...http://www.marxrv.com/12volt/12volt.htm

I just bought a battery from wally world, I've had decent luck with them and the price is less than most, personally I think they're all over priced.

Thanks for the info Chauncy, I won't waste my money on them then...

Optima seems to give a lot more power.
The stereo in my Checkmate would blow out and the sundeck was very slow lifting before switching to Optima and isolating the other new battery to keep onboard as a spare. The engine also seemed to turn over faster when cranking-It takes a lot of juice to start a heavily modified 454!
I sold the Checkmate after having the battery in it for 2 years so I really don't know about it's longevity.
Just bought an optima for my Glastron
Red top optimas have 36 month free replacement

Due to their $68 price, I have been buying the wally world group 27 batteries.  Seems hit or miss but if I take care of them, they seem to last 4 or 5 yrs, no problem.  I have 3 batteries in my 14' and I have another spare in case I want to make the front trolling motor 24V.  A couple times I know I didn't treat 'em right (left them too long w/o maint. charge or didn't check the water level) and those ones only lasted a couple years.

Since I have been hitting the electric only lakes heavy the last 5 or 6 years, they have all gotten a workout.

Mika -  I did a bit of research on the subject about 2 years ago.  Die Hard is what I came up with, from about 20 or so similar fishing/boating forums.  Although, it seemed like a toss up between a bunch.  It seems to be working just fine for me.  The previous battery that came with my boat purchase was a Wally World ever last or whatever they are called.  It was likely a few years old when I got it, and lasted me about 3 years with another year milked...  If I recall, the Die Hard is about the same price as the Wally World one.  Both seem to be good bets for the money.
Note - Mine is not used for starting, mostly for trolling motor and electronics.

The batteries that I just removed are a Stowaway dated 02 and an Exide Nautilus dated 01
One of the 2 still keeps a charge
