Outboards Survey

Hey guys,
I am looking into buying a new 40 or 50hp outboard but having hard time deciding what brand to get. So tell me what kind of outboard you have and what you like or dislike about it. Please comment on what brands you believe are better or worse.

    I have an older 50HP Yamaha 2 stroke (think 1988). I haven't run it in 3 years or so.

    Likes -
    A lot faster than my 15hp...
    Electric start
    power tilt
    oil injected, so don't need to mix gas

    Dislikes -
    Can't run on hp restricted lakes (why it hasn't run in so long)
    takes a little bit to get it started when cold
    goes through gas pretty well, compared to little motor


    When I used it on the rivers, it was a good motor. I don't have any other comparison in the size though. My smaller motor is an Evinrude, and can sit over the Winter and takes 2-3 pulls to start in 50 degree Spring day. The Yamaha, unless already warm, could take 5-10 minutes of cranking to get it started up. Might need carbuerator rebuilt, or could be an issue they all have?

    I have a 2009 Evinrude Etec 50 hp.

    1. Starts immediately.
    2. Has its own oil reservoir, self injects.
    3. Self fogging.

    Does not have the same get up and go as regular 2 stroke even though they tell you it will.

    Two or four stroke?

    If you're not using it to troll, I would go with the two stroke. You'll save money up front and the newer 2 strokes are a lot cleaner and more efficient than older models. They are usually a bit lighter than the 4 strokes as well.

    We have a Yamaha 4 stroke 50 horse, been a good motor BUT if you don't drop the lower unit and at least put a coating of grease on the impeller annually it will shred the impeller on the first start. Sometimes even spins the cup which means you have to buy complete new water pump kit and they're not cheap. Other than that one issue we've been happy with it.

    Im mainly looking at 2strokes cause i dont know much about 4 strokes. The motor will be used as my main engine. I have an 1991 40hp 2 stroke evinrude that seized up on bay a few wks ago and its junk. Michalaks said bearing on crank went. They now sell Tohatsu engines and they look and sound pretty awesome but i dont know anyone who has one.

    Can't help ya with Tohatsu, but there seems to be a lot of them around. I think they cost less than the big 3. I'd hit google or yahoo and do a search for reviews...
