mounting rod holders

So I have a ranger multispecies and im thinking of getting the big jon rod holders. The problem I have is mounting them I have the ranger rails and don't really want to drill into my fiberglass if I don't have to
Any suggestions or do I have to bite the bullet and drill? Also I want to get the ones with multiple rod holders w one base.

I don't really see any way to NOT drill into your gunwales.  I know it's painful, just think it through carefully before you drill.  When you say you want multiple rod holders with one base, I'm assuming you mean a triple or quadruple set or tree.  While this is certainly a valid option, you also might want to think about a rail mount system with several singles or trees or a combination of both.

The nice thing about the rail is that you can move your holders forward or back, or add different combinations of vertical trees,  masts, rigger bases, or even accessories like a cleat, tool holder, or drink holder etc.  With a single mount you have to live where you put it, unless you want to drill more holes.  However, if you don't have at least 3' of open gunwale on both sides, a single mount might be your best option.  Good luck.

I posted this for another guy asking about rod holders for a Ranger Boat.

Check out Cisco rod holders, they are quite pricey but I've heard nothing but great things about them. They make holders specially for Ranger style boats.

Here is a different make, and they are only singles. These are the ones I used on my Ranger boat.

I thought about mentioning this, but I thought he said it was an older Ranger and didn't know how long ago Ranger started making their rail mounts.

Coming from somebody who has tried to use the T-Bar rod holder set designed to fit in your seat pedistool--don't waste your money...This setup might work fine for holding rods which see no stress; but for pulling dipseys, weighted sets, board, etc-no good! The unit does not lock down real snug, and can flex, wobble, and wander all over.

I believe this is the set or a similar set. Again I would not reccomend going this route:

I bought this same t-bar system and ending up cutting it all up and only using the rod holders that came with it. I ending up with a custom base which I fabricated to fit along my transom.

My boat is a 1995 Ranger and it has the rails.

How are Big Jon rod holders and planer mast mounted to the fiberglass? Is the hardware included? How does it hold with all of the pulling?

I'm not a Big Jon rod holder fan, but if you use them, make sure you use backer plates.  If you do this you won't have to worry about stress on the holders.

A metal plate that is a bit larger that the actual mount for the rod holder.
It goes on the under side of the area that you are mounting the holder to so the bolts don't pull out of the material that the boat is made of.

Always use stainless bolts and nuts, never use sheet metal screws, wood screws or self-tapping screws.
I have seen people use toggle bolts successfully in places that couldn't be accessed from behind.

On the internet, EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion!
