how young is too young?

I know that people tend to not phisically (sp.) show anger towards young kids when fishing, but how young would everyone say is too young for the zoos up there.... I've wanted to bring my son up multiple times, but never did because I know that his attention would only be focused towards fishing for a short period of time, and after that he may throw rocks or whatever.... which is a nuisance to me so i know it would be to others.... Whats your take?

I think you'd have to be the judge of that.  If you think he'll throw rocks, I wouldn't suggest taking him to machestor hole.  You could try somewhere upstream.

Around 10 or so. Let him fish and you teach proper ethics and the techniques of fishing. When he is bored leave and do something fun for a child that age.
Remember your camera, and bring dry clothes to change into.

That may be the first thing you have ever said that made sense.

There's plenty of spots in Erie that you can take a kid and have some privacy.  Not to long ago I was fishing a stretch of creek and a gentleman and his young daughter came walking down from upstream.  I only say a handful of anglers myself that day, so I can assure you they saw even fewer.

This at this point, fish are pretty far up the creeks and you can afford to spread out.  I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but be careful crossing the creek!  Those creek beds are slick!

When I saw those two, she was just wearing a pair of boots, he would lift her up to cross the stream.  They do make hip waders in small, youth sizes I do believe, and honestly, you don't need much else to fish 98% of the creeks.  If you're in deeper than your hip waders, you're probably standing on fish...

Your son is old enough, the question is are you old enough. If he can cast and follow your directions, he is doing as well as most. If you are able to let your fishing be secondary and allow him the time he needs to learn, then you are old enough. My bet is that you both are ready. Enjoy your time on the stream with your son, you won't have enough.

The main thing to remember is not to become upset when he gets bored. If he starts throwing rocks in the water it is time to leave or at least find something for him to focus on. Getting upset will only show him the negative side of fishing. Also if he is not catching fish, try to help him catch one. My 2 1/2 year old loves to fish here at Pymy. Granted it lasts for an hour , if they're not biting.

Personally I don't think I would take a kid up there unless he has a decent amount of fishing experience before hand.  I understand your supposed to have patience and teach the kids.  Well when it takes 2 hours to get there teach them a little closer to home, and get them to understand fishing, then go up.  I don't just feel this way about kids either.  I've turned down taking grown men because they don't know how to fish.  Of course you could always go sit on the wall and get your kicks with zero fishing knowledge, so thats always and option.  But to actually go up and FISH then make sure they "WANT TO GO".  There's probably nothing worse than taking someone up to Erie this time of the year when its freezing that gets discouraged easily and wants to leave immediatly.

Just let him know before you leave are you sure you want to go. Also tell him it will be boring if we don't catch fish. And let them know you are going to stay for a while and fish, Yes we might switch creeks. But try to keep his interest. And before you do go make sure he does know how to cast somewhat. Also fishing experience will do him good. But just dont give him powerbait in a rapid stream and go walk down 20 feet and fish for yourself. Teach him what to use and how to use it.

Just take him/her where you would want to go! Combat fishing, then no, real fishing, YES, anywhere! If you were that age again, what would you like to do?

My grandson is six and very patient when it comes to fishing. Got him tying easy flies and doing some fly fishing for bluegills. Took him for steelies last week. He got one. Wanted me to reel it in. He nearly got a busted nuckle, but he got it in after a good fight. A time like this I won,t even fish. I'll stand right beside him and help him all the way. Besides you don't have time to fish--- getting the line untangled from everything every few minutes. Spent about two hours. When he wanted to leave, we left and stopped for a snack on the way home. If the pix came out... notice fly rod and a big smile!

Both of my daughters could fly fish broken water on their own by 9 yrs old below is a pic of my oldest daughter with a steelie she caught and landed on her own.  The next pic is where she spent the rest of the day catching minnows.  She had more fun with the minnows.  By the time my youngest daughter was ready we would fish and then go to Splash Lagoon.  Believe me you will have more fun at splash lagoon than fishing.  Your kid will be stuck playing with you and not his friends.  My daughter still talks about fishing Erie and Splash Lagoon.

Just get them out there and get them fishing. If they dont want to fish then leave. Thats another way you will know how they are still to young to fish. IF not then fish. Learn from the past experience maybe?????

You can find kid's size hip and chest waders at Cabelas.  When I started taking my son I wouldn't fish but would help him and be the net man.  Just stay until he's ready to leave.  You will soon find that he is ready to go on his own.  Good luck and EVERYBODY TAKE A KID OR A FIRST TIMER FISHING!!!  Help keep this great sport great.  Good luck all.
