Emerald shiners

With trout season about to open and the use of emeralds for panfish and walleye has anyone heard exactly what the new regs are? I know you can not take Emeralds out of the lake Erie water shed, But I can go across the state line (10 miles) into NY and buy certified clean shiners that I can use inland. I did this this winter ice fishing.I asked the man at the bait store 3 times if this would make this legal bait in PA and he said all i needed was the stamped bait receipt. I spoke with a fish warden at the lake in PA. He could not give me a definitive answer. He said he had read nothing on it. Was just wondering if they had come  up with a way to prove the bait was certified or not. If the fish wardens don't know the law how can they begin to enforce it..Hate to get pinched for a bucket full of bait..

I was at the PSA meeting on Coraopolis when Chuck Murray was talking and he said some bait shops would have the VHS free minnows .Some places have the capabilities to test their bait and suppliers also..Heard that the niagara river and bar area is where the majority of emerald shiners come from...The watershed is bigger thay you might think, maybe Spoonchucker has the map that Chuck was showing and how far down I79 it goes, near Conneaut lake I believe not just Lake Erie...Ray

I dont have the maps you mentioned. I'll try to find some. An easy rule of thumb, if you don't KNOW that it flows into lale Erie. Do NOT take live fish from any great lake, or great lake tributary or into it. That includes any, and all ponds or lakes. You might also try the Pa. Sea Grant link below. Most of the articles are in PDF which for some reason I can't open, but there is good info. available, if you can.

It is really best, not to move fish from any watershed to another. Or any body of water to another regardless of the legalities. One never knows, what they could be spreading.

    I agree with spoon^^^

I talked to several guys ice fishing that were moaning because they could no longer take emeralds to inland lakes. They were crying like it was the end of the world.  Fish a trout magnet tipped with maggots or waxworms for spring panfish. It will outfish any type of minnow 20 to 1.  It's not that big of a deal folks.

The only reason the "safe" zone runs into Crawford Co. is because that is the drainage for Conneuat Creek.  Don't take the bait out of the steelhead streams if it isn't VHS free.  Everything else is "inland"
