Which one of these two "knuckleheads is the "Stallion" and which one is  "Clubber Lang"   Hope they are not serious and the Thrilla in Pulaski does not make U-Tube?
Time for a good story.  Just got back this afternoon. Did well on South Sandy Monday. However the water was dropping fast.
No drift boats or russian fishing fleet around.   Sunday afternoon fished Pineville down to avoid the crowds.  Three of us  hooked multiple steelhead Centerpinning egg sacks - egg sucking leaches and yes pink  beads.    Ran into two retired CLASS spin fisherman ( Husband and Wife) spinning flies.  Both hooked and landed nice steelhead around me and let me fish in between them with no issues.

Fished this AM  till mid morning before checking out back at Pinevile and yes observed the flotilla of 40 plus drift boats as well as many clueless  pontoons.    One polite drift boat guide that passed me offered a few suggestions as to where the fish went.  However the hot spot of the past few day was no longer producing.    Upon loading car up and having a Labatts Blue the older couple returned, to fish below Pineville again.  Advised them the Pineville down run was crowded with boats as well as fisherman.

The couple shared a good story of "Fisherman Kindness"  as well as their favorite flys which both tied and were very succesfull with.
" the Couple saw my Subaru and advised upon Fishing Monday late at Pineville and getting back to their 1990 Subaru the car engine would not start."   The drift boats were long gone and only a few cars in the parking lot remained.     Neither of the Retired couples cell phones would pick up any service.     Apparantly there were four Connecticut police fisherman that came the couple rescue, called for service help and stayed with the couple until service arrived to assist the " Retired Couple" with their mishap.  In the end, it all worked out.  The couple bought a new Subaru and also had some good fishing days.

Hats off the the FOUR policemen from Connecticut!   Good to hear and see these kinds of stories rather than  fisherman knocking each other for their post!

Wow- everybody's a steelhead guide now.

Its crazy aint it? When it gets cold it will thin out. Are you getting a trip in this year or what?

2 years ago i fished altmar in beginning of feb. a few guys in fly stretches. school house and wires had 25 guys in sight with 3 boats... it was 21 below zero that morning... cold doesn't scare away everyone. this past jan and feb i made 4 trips... fortunately a lot of weekdays with some weekends. there was pressure everyday, and there were many single mornings, and a few sub zero...as i said, cold doesn't scare away everyone

Right thats what the thining out part meant. Schoolhouse always has guides/guys in it. Thats it you wanna fight. This is fight club dammit, lets get ready to rumble. Anyway in the deep winter months i Been at ellis/town/longbrige/muskrat ect ect ect all by myself for most of the day.
Fish on dude.

Hey rich nice story. There are plenty of good people out there no doubt. Im sure everyone gets that dude that just does not get it from time to time. Hey its a big river and If you have the legs you can find some nice spots with few people. One thing I hate is when Im fishing a spot thats 10feet in front of me and people will make 50 foot cast from the other side and fish the same run. I mean come on. I do not do that and would expect the same from anyone else. But what are you gonna do.

Salmo - maybe you need to have closed threads here in an exclusive "guides" section.
Charge them accordingly..

From Little Lukeys on Rte 13 - head east on Rte 13 for 4 miles.
Right at intersection of Rte 13 and Rte 104, suck a left at Kaesog sign.
Proceed 2 miles to stop sign and suck a left.
Bar on left 1 mile - can't miss it.

As Metal would say -  So easy a Caveman can Find It... :)

All Welcome - I'm Buying..

I'll be up all through the winter, jon - if not this Friday we'll make it a raincheck - and yes I will buy - at least the first few rounds...

I like the place, very nice owner, workers and friendly locals hang in there. Pretty good bar food too.
In the winter, there is a non-stop comings and goings of snowmobiler gangs as they ride the trails..

Some nights there are more sleds than cars.

I don't hit the bars often, but for a change of pace once in awhile it is a very nice place.

Give it a try - big plus is that you don't have to drive to Pulaski and take a chance with the cops.

I might hit the UFZ before it closes down on 11-30.

Gerbils are outlawed with the new weight restrictions up there..

right on johnny, so have i, but you do get those fluke days with crowds. i never fish schoolhouse area really...hey drake, i'll taake you up on that rain check; i've always enjoyed kasoag when willing to take the ride. now drake, keep in mind there is a county sheriff that frequents the altmar area just around closing time of the bars, so be careful...btw i thought you don't fish the fly zones?? hey salmo, -20 is tough, but usually a -20 doesn't have a cloud in the sky and no wind; there's something to be said about that. the last -20 morning i encountered actually warmed up to 22 by 2 in the afternoon. it felt like a heat wave and i fished the whole afternoon without gloves...the morning was with double full fingered gloves though... fish on

DB - we will have to make a point to hook up this winter 4 sure.

I hear ya on the cops - I don't stay out late - I'm a happy hour kind of guy and head back to camp around 9pm via the back county road that leads to my camp near the SR falls. I leave it up to young guys to close down the bars anymore.

I don't mind the really cold days - besides I fish the magic hours in winter from 10am to 3 pm when the water may warm a degree or too. No need for that o'dark thirty stuff in Jan & Feb.

The coldest day I recall fishing up there the high for the day was 0-5deg. I froze my butt off in a driftboat - even with a propane heater. There were no rubber mats in it and the cold from the boat floor was sucked right through the soles of my wading shoes into my legs...My fault for not wearing the heavy soled bootfoot waders that day. Lesson learned.

DB - I never fished the LFZ. But I usually take a walk along the UFZ in November each year before it shuts down. Nice hike down through the pines toward the big pool. Hopefully I will get a glimpse of it on T-Day weekend b4 it shuts down on Nov 30. Very pretty scenery up there.

Have you ever tried fishing it in the spring and early summer?
Wear a bug suit or smoke ten cigars at once - the black flies are BRUTAL.

we'll have to do that drake... i don't target upper river after the steel spawn, i prefer silver drop backs... hint hint.... the black flies were nothing this past year since 2nd week in march hit mid 80s and then the next week went down to low teens at night. i wish that could happen every year. for the summer, i've worked my arse off the past 8 years during the summer up there and have not had time to consistently wet the line as that is necessary during these months. but i target salmon in mid to late summer and am very successful at times... hopefully not this coming summer but the one after, i will have the time to catch a summer run in the months that i'd prefer to catch one which is june july or early august... those are the most pristine months in my opinion... oh yeah, btw, if we butt heads up there soemitime; beware, i am known to close a bar every now and then... tight lines

I believe sarg - but I would like to know a bit more - with or without a pic..

Was it a buck or hen - did it have a bit ole nasty hookjaw if it was a buck? What did you catch it on?

I don't carry a scale around me, not even a net... I know if I caught what I thought was a 20 lber trutta (especially a buck with hookjaw) I would be running down to Port Ontario to the hippy chick taxidermist with that fish in my arms like a big ole loaf of EYEtalian bread. :)

Besides a couple of pics posted by Capt Kevin Davis (the Oswego River master) I don't think I have ever seen a 20lber caught out of the Salmon River.

Nevertheless - congrats again on catching a monster..

well sarg had mentioned she started spilling her eggs, that is a shame. most likely none of her eggs got fertilized but hey, that's part of the game we choose to play. the biggest brown i put on scale was 12 and i have that one mounted; but have definitely caught larger...

I caught a 10 pounder once, but it was a local wild fish. Relative to catching a unicorn 20 up there. I worked with a guy who said he caught a 22 lb female once & he showed a pic. to prove it. Absolute monster.
Anyhow, I never feel a need to kill & mount a fish, but I agree with draketrutta. I'd be mounting that one.

my brown mount was the second trout i kept in 8 years with my first being my first steelhead when i was 11, and since then i've only kept maybe 5. i can count on 2 hands how many trout i've kept in the salmon river. i don't think i can put a number on how many i've caught...

msfishy - you find out if there are fish in that stretch unless you fish it. There are always fish moving upstream and there is nice holding spots in that area.

btw - I think the curve below the RR bridge behind the Papermill is one of the nicest spots on the river. Nice deep pool where you can get a great drift when basically standing on shore.

Good luck to you.

Draketrutta,i agree with u,one time i pulled a nice hen from out behind that broken drain pipe  that comes down the embankment and breaks off just near the first bridge pillar.
thanks for your reply.
