Erie steelhead

Just curious I have a 5wt fly rod set up and was curious what the best or average is for Steelhead, couple people I talked to have given me mixed answers from anything from 5wt up to 7wt. I'm not really a great fly fisherman but got a hang of it and would love to catch a steelhead this year with it. thanks

5-8 is the rough range that is appropriate. Depending on the conditions, the particular stream you're on, and how many other guys are around, you'll probably want to be heavier than a 5, but it can be done. If your 5 wt is a particularly powerful 5 wt (and thus fishes more like a real 6) then you'll be fine. Probably better to stay away from the super crowded sections if you're fishing a lighter rod.

My personal idea rod for Erie steel is an 11' 6 wt. But that's just me.

    Thanks

Rick has given you very good advise. If you want to use your 5 weight use it and go from there though. As the water and weather gets colder the fish are not quite as wild when hooked in my opinion and you have an even better chance of being successful.

For a couple of years I fished one of the smaller west side tribs and used an 8 1/2 foot 5 weight and loved using it in the brush. My 10 foot was just to long most times there but it was wonderful to use that long a rod on Elk Creek.

If you find out you need a 6 or 7 weight I'm sure there are some good deals at Fish USA. Call Worm-waster or one of the other staff and they will fix you up.

    I like my 10 foot 7 weight.

This is a topic we've went over a bunch on here. If the search function is working, try searching for "rod weight" or something like that. Later when I have time I'll dig around some and try to find the older threads where we really got into the topic.
