sorry for not reading the posts & replies completely but just want to make some points..
1.#1 fly in the spring is a baitfish imitation.. Think about that..
2. DB.. 21 years puts you on the stream around what age 8 ? Only things that have changed are the improvements of gear, clothing, transportation & the **** internet !! All these things have increased the pressure.. A-Holes have always been there ..
3. DSR is not the holy grail.. Been going there forever .. Before it was DSR. It has it's faults.
4. There is more to fishing then big fish.. Why is it other popular streams seem to have better etiquette but smaller fish ?

The area from the barrel hole down to the wires was always a cluster, will always be a cluster.

Too may bank fishermen and bumperboats.

Those fish have been C&R's dozens of times - maybe more.

Hey Tuna did you ever park out on the road going into whats now the DSR in the early AM and end up sliding down that ravine in the dark. Thought I'd die-it went down forever.

good point retired... but my original post was about guys who were targeting steel... alot of steel guys are snobs these days... its pretty pitiful if you ask me. let's face it, we don't have to be best friends, but come on now, when targeting steel, we should respect each other as much as we respect the fish...

one other short story i have is about a guy lat year in the LFZ. i walked up from the bridge and just scoped out the situation some time in january last year. no rod or boots on juyst scoping. i ran in to a guy who was shocked that i was not geared up based on our converstaion. he was a good guy and in the end understood where i was coming from. on the other hand there was a guy above the bridge who had three rods laid out on his car. and when i went back down to my car he was switching rods i guess to try a different presentation (in reality he was just trying to boost his ego since he probably just spent 3000 dollars on 3 new rods and reels). since i saw the guy about 30 minutes before hand andi know he saw me..., i figured i'd ask him if he had any luck. he answered me nastily with "fishing has nothing to do with luck". i didn't hear what he had said at first but i did catch the attitude. so i said excuse me... he than said again very nastily "fishing has nothing to do with luck". i thought for about 5 seconds of what i really wanted to say, but i controlled myself and said whatever pal... let me ask you guys... whatever happened to simple conversation and politeness??? it seems to have been most on the salmon river. will we ever get it back??? i guess not, the world is living proof. it's everywhere these days...

it was actualy age 9 tuna... why do i feel like you are trying to insult me with that one... 21 years is 21 years my friend...and trust me they are quality years.how many do you have 30-35??? do you feel as if you are above me or something??? if you do keep your ego to yourself...and you are right, there have always been a- holes, but if you experienced what i experienced this past saturday you would feel the same way i'm sure. and as i said, my concern was mostly for my friend who has never hooked a steelhead yet...

btw tuna, when did i say it was the holy grail??? just figured i'd say where i was fishing. i don't think i made one comment towards it being BS just because it was DSR. i have encountered many a-holes there before...

this is why people target big fish tuna... both of these pics are from this past saturday. i actually landed 4. maybe i'm being a little over sensitive but it's for a reaosn. age means nothing at this point. i'm a little offended by your post to be honest with you. maybe i should've PM'd you but i said f-it... should i maybe show you pics from my childhood to prove myself???? oh wait, why should i prove myself to you...
in a gentlemens tone of voice... i bet i can show you a thing or 2 about a thing or 2. and in reality.... i probably could've shown you a thing or 2 about a thing or 2 15 years ago... let's leave it at that...

don't let them pinners sneak up on you, they come out of the woods like ninjas!!!

is that a toothpick in your mouth?

if so, how far up the line do you peg your bead?

when using a bead i peg it about 10 inches above my fly or bait... remeber though, i use many methods... that fish in particular took my pink trout egg sack because my bead was still pinned 10 inches above it. although that beautiful buck struck an egg sack of his own kind...not to say that the bead didn't help entice the strike though...

Never used a bead 10" up the line, IMO too much of a chance to hook the fish "elsewhere".

With the widespread use of beads on the river now, rumor has it that the DEC will address the matter in the 2012 reg updates.

If that moffit system that R Jones mentioned on another thread is legal, the DEC will have a tough time trying to differentiate between a hookless fly tied above a hook and a bead. IMO they will have to treat them both the same if they try to regulate the distance above the hook, which is commonly 1.5 to 2.5" - the way most guides and other folks are fishing it on the SR.

Will be interesting to see what transpires.

hey dake, good point, but 99 percent of the time when i use a bead i have a sac under it, i don't see the harm in pinning it 10 inches up with a sac under it. when using a single bead i do about 1.5-3 inches...out of the 9 i hooked saturday morning i think only 2 pulled the bead dow. the rest were on the sac with the bead still up. i have a theory that it's just something else for them to look at and entice a strike.

I would love to see people start fishing in "Rotation". I first experienced this in Nova Scotia fishing for Atlantics.... Loved it. Gave everyone a chance to fish the pool without a lot of pressure. They even had a bench at a lot of the popular pools where you could sit and chat with folks, have a cup of coffee from the thermos and just enjoy the day on the river while you waited your turn. I would love to see the SR go in that direction.... but the odds of that are very slim.... sad to say.

That will never happen in a million years. The same guys will go in with a flashlight and camp out in the good spots for hours and the same guys who didn't get there early enough will horn in on them. A few guys will follow stream etiquette by opening up there spot after hooking 10 fish and moving to a new spot where they are not crowding anyone.

I've never fished Nova Scotia and probably never will. Are you required to hire a guide to fish there like other places in Canuckland?

As far as rotation - I believe in the first come first serve principle. If a guy gets on the water at o dark thirty and claims his spot - I see no need for him to give it up to a guy that strolled down the path after he took his time enjoying a contintental breakfast.

Take a hike and find another spot.

If I want to sit on a bench, I'll wait till I'm old and feeble then visit the mall and try to get upskirt shots of delinquent teenage girls on my smart phone....

Sorry - I'm just an ignorant American.

If it was taken as an insult it was not meant to be. Just making reference as to your age and ability. And yes age has nothing to do with ability , you seem to have studied well grasshopper. Nothing to prove to me.. I just love seeing pictures. I’m not a very good word smith..
Don’t know what that thing or 2 you are talking about but I have been there, done that a lifetime over, trust me .. No axe to grind. My point about dsr (which I do love the water there) is it's not perfect, never was never will be.. Nothing in reference to anyone at all.

Big fish.. Well.. Yup the Hatchery produces some bigguns.. I just don't understand why oh why it also brings out the worst in what some people may want to call a fishing experience... Always trying to manipulate the regulations.. WHY ?? Just fish for darn sake and there would not need all this stupid (my) money spent on stupid regulations. I fish many other very popular waters which are blue ribbon streams and never find the disrespect that is given to the waters out there (not all but many) .. Seems like big fish make some people crazy and forget what fishing is all about..

As for this site.. Those who have been around long enough see the trends here.. The same few giving the same information.. Sure it may help the few who visit during those special times but then the crowds thin and the music stops. Some places turn into something great and meet new friends who share like minded interests but in the end most just become habit..
There really is not much more for me to add after 6 years of posting information here and sometimes for me it just becomes habit . Seems like a good time for a changing of the Guard..

Hey tuna just sheer misunderstanding on my part. You know the biggest issues and problems I encounter in life are usually stemmed from misunderstandings...especially when it comes to my wife.maybe I should've questioned you first. Sorry brother. But atleast you got your fish porn...

For Nova Scotia.... a guide is not required. New Brunswick requires guides and select rivers and areas of Quebec require guides.I'd love to hit Quebec one of these days but would prefer to spend my money in BC for steel on the skeena or sussit first

hey mc; my friend fishes the papermill all the time. not me though. i'd assume you definitely are mistaking me for someone else, but maybe you've seen me elsewhere. the pic with me in it was just below the wall pool... the fished was hooked about 50 yards above it though

Does anyone really think those slobs who would really be the cause of "shift fishing" would stick to it like the rest of us would. There would just be another kind of Bovine Field Splatter going on .
Furthermore when that cutting in activity got going how much would the FEES be to go on the river with necessary MONITORS all over the freaking place.
It would put the place out of business and my place up for quick sale.
Got no problems whatsoever with guys pushing the legal limits of gear. The laws are simply just too specific up there when it comes to presentations. I try to be as legal as possible then get cut in on by snaggers with 5' rods and a LEGAL hook set up. Its just too bad that all too commonly enforcement sees fit to have to carry a tape measure instead of a measure of common sence. Just stand back and watch a bit the wrongdoers stand right out.

p.s.-I actually saw a guy lift and string up one of those half white -half dead- sorry butt looking Kings- His other job is carrying a Work For Food sign.
