50 yards will work if you're fishing up in Erie. If you're fishing for something that can be expected to get you into your backing (various saltwater species), then put the whole 200 Yards on.

You have to remember that backing on a reel isn't there just for long runs it also helps fill the reel to keep your flyline from getting small tight wraps around the arbor . Sometimes the line can get wrapped over its self in a way that can cause a real problem. I would put all the backing on I could but make sure it doesn't interfere with the operation of the reel.

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

If you do put all 200 yards of backing on it will help fill your reel better and that in turn should give you a higher/quicker line retrieve ratio.

You also could increase the pound test/diameter of whatever backing you decide to use to accomplish the same thing.

I do agree 50 yards of whatever size is plenty for Erie tribs.

as said the backing fills the spool.  i also have a lamson 3.5 and use 50lb dacron.  check the web and you'll find better prices than in the fly shops.  you won't find the preety colours, i don't fish for show, i do what's practical.
