Yep, your hooked. Once you go fly, it opens up a whole new realm of  fishing.

There's nothing like the feel of the take, especially on the swing, of a fly rod.

It's a brand new ballgame. From tying your own flies, landing your first trout and/or King on your own tied fly, to figuring out how to catch all these beautiful creatures on some fur, feathers and floss.

You'll probably learn more about fish in the next few years than you have in your lifetime.

Enjoy.

roll cast # 7's & 5's and still think the line is propelling the fly ? Well , Ok...

All day long, on a roll cast the line is leading the leader and tippet.

When nymphing like your trout stream be it pocket water or what ever ,remember trout look down in the gravel for food , salmon do not so yes there is a difference to me ..

Oohh, yes they do, salmon key in on eggs heavily and even though many loose eggs float up in the water column, salmon pick up most of them just above the gravel. In smaller trout streams, when you are nymphing with micro shot or not, you nymph is much closer to the bottom agreed.

On the SR, you nymph differently with the weight, since your(my) tippet is keeping the nymph about 3-4 feet up off the gravel.

with a 14 ft. 9 weight and a double tapered floating line i can roll a #5 with about 40 -50 ft. of line with out stripping in at all...and i believe it's the line rather than the weight...rarely do i backhand on the salmon river especially with weight. back hand was meant for grace and double hauls for surface sipping trout or shrimp slirping bone fish... hard to achieve with weight and hard to prevent wind knots... but hey, everyone's different...

good for you cal... i'm sure you're hooked...

no disrespect . the weights and rod lengths have changed.
Can one roll cast some #5 & 7's on a 9' rod ? Of course.

No prob HT, you know, that's what these forums are here for, to discuss and debate, share info and methods of fishing.

You've know as well as anyone, I remember some great old debates back on the old forum.

the one disadvantage with a 9' is the inability to mend a long belly upstream... tight lines guys

My rod is a 10'. I found it difficult to roll cast with weight and a fly but i could strip my line in and false cast a good distance. And Salt i drove by trout brook and saw a landcruser with ny licance plates that read SALT i just thought i might be you.

happiness is fishing!
