I got a new toy too!

Now I will be the first to admit that I was never impressed with Lowrance electronics.....always been partial to Garmin.  Last winter, I got a deal on a HDS-5 that I would have been dumb not to take.  If I didn't like it, I could have sold it for what I paid and not lost anything.  With that being said, I really like the HDS-5.  So much, in fact, that when a deal on a HDS-7 presented itself, I jumped.  I picked it up on Friday and installed it when I got off the water on Saturday.  Now, I'm gonna move the HDS-5 to the console and use it as a fishfinder and keep my Garmin at the console and use it as my GPS.

This was a very tough install.  I had to remove and replace 4 screws to change the bracket.....coundn't even finish a beer in the time it took.

They take a beating from alot of guys, but I like my Lowrance and my Eagle!

The issues that they had with the mapping on the HDS units had to hurt them though...

Lowrances aren't bad, but after fishing with a lowrance and a furuno on the same boat. Furono hands down is much better.

I had a Raymarine HD on the bow last year.  I liked it too, but it wasn't made for this particular applicatio0n.  It wasn't viewable in direct sun.  I don't know how the Furunos are in this capacity.  From what I see, they (Furuno & Raymarine) are geared more towards the trolling crowd.

I have the HDS 7 on my boat. I had some issues with GPS accuracy. My boat is sooooo fast that I was often clocked at between 700-1000 mph SOG! I would also sometimes lose a GPS lock. Another round of software updates fixed it all, and is now running flawlessly.

I got the 5 back in November.  There have been 3 updates so far.  I haven't checked the 7 yet.  It was shipped to a pro-staffer in July, so I'm thinking that it has the current version.
