type of anchor

Hello guys. I was wondering if anyone can tell me the type of anchor i should be using for my boat. I have a 12ft grumman aluminum lightweight. It's classified as a rowboat. This boat is very sturdy. I have 2 mushroom anchors. The type of water i fish in is a resivor with a muddy bottom. Last night with 10mph winds my boat was moving all around. I may not be setting the anchor right. When i pull up to a spot where i want to anchor i just drop the anchor straight down off the bow then tie off the excess then i do the same for the back of the boat. Should i be letting slack in the line or am i not using the right anchor?

The recommended rode is 7 to 1 minumum. 20 feet of water X7= 140' rode (anchor rope)
I use only as much needed to hold the boat. I have not had much luck with the mushroom anchors although if you have 2 15lb. anchors on a 12 foot boat that should hold okay. You need slack in the rope so the wave dont lift the anchor and move you. I have an anchor I bought from Weigel Brothers Marine in Franklin PA that weighs around 20 pounds and is made for the river that I can guarantee will stop your boat instantly but they are around $150.00. It has 5 fingers that hook into rocks, mud or whatever the bottom is. I don't know what it's called but thats the one that they recommended and it works great. good luck I would just try longer ropes.

Try leaving out more slack this will help alot. If the bottom is super soft and the mushroom won't hold a "river" anchor will. You can get one at the Wally-Mart or Cabelas have them on sale now and there vinyl coated. The best river anchor is a Richter Anchor and a 14# will cost you around $65. but I think this is kinda a overkill for your type fishing. Some guys use a large bungee cord to attach the anchor line to the cleat. When a wind gust pushes the boat the bungee stretches and prevents the anchor from coming loose. Hope this info helps.

Danforth style anchor will hook into mud very well. I use a 14# to hold my 4500# boat in 4 footers on Erie. Get a danforth 8 or 10# and a 6' section of chain between the anchor and your rode.

12' boat shouldn't be hard to hold, like suggested above, let a little more line out. The recommendations 5:1 or 7:1 are overkill IMO, maybe if you were anchoring for the night. I used to use an old brake rotor for an anchor and it worked great! Any kind of anchor with flukes should work great in sand/mud bottom.
