Dipsy Question

Hello I am thinking of making a trip to Ontario for kings and have not done this before. Question is can you put snap weights in front of dipsys to get them deeper ? how much? and how far in front of the dipsy ? any help trolling for kings would be apperciated. Thanks

Funny question as the last time outing the smaller dipseys I was running were not gettin it so my bud suggested a 3oz inline weight which was spliced in about a foot in front of the dip. Worked great, 0 tangles and did get fish !

Get yourself some Mag Dipsies and some wire diver rods and you should have no problem getting to the depth you need. Dipsies with weight would be hard to gauge your depth IMO.

Quite true. All I knew was that out 200 would tick the bottom in 40', so after the addition of the weight it was a guessing game. Next time out will have more of the right dipseys on board ! But in a pinch it eased my mind knowing I was a little closer to the marks.

had a big boat and fished ontario many times for many years, never put weights on dipseys, just put it on 3 setting and let out 200 or 300 ft of line, go out to 500 ft of water and thats were the steelies and kings should be now..out of olcott, niagara, wilson,or east of that..have riggers, use that for depths, fish around the bar, we used the silver dollar dipseys on side riggers and worked great..all depends on how your boat is rigged..kings to my memory were never on the bottom, lakers were down there..steelies were within 20 ft of top in deep water most of the time, this time of year..good luck..

Last yr in the fall, we were getting them from 68 to 75 down over 300-400 fow.  Therefore, theres no need to weight down those dipseys.  There are other, more efficient ways to get your baits down deeper while trolling for kings anyway.....various wire lines, Dipsy Mags, torpedo weights, etc etc.....good luck.

Big dipseys should do ya, without the weight. You only need to reach the thermocline. A couple years ago I started using lead core and that stuff is nice too. I have some old Pink Ladies that still see action. I like the way they release and are resetable without retrieving.

Thanks Guy's not sure how deep to fish and have no down riggers on the boat but do have out riggers. This is a new challenge for me and the plans are to go out of Olcott around the first September for a couple of days. this help will make the learning curb easier. Thanks

Eliminate the learning curve. If you go the beginning of Sept the matures will be staging in close getting ready to run, early am before light up inside of 100' will be key, and long leads on Jplugs. You are at a disadvantage with no riggers. Steelies will be about 50-60' down mostly over 400-500' of water still at that time. Spool up some dipsey rods with 30# wire and run dipseys off of them with spinny fly combos. Glow baits early and late and bright chrome when the sun is high. We will be in Olcott from 8/20-22 we may leave a few behind for ya. Don't forget your derby ticket for 30$ a guy it could be worth 20K. Leadcore and copper rigs are good options this time of year as well.

never had to use weights just use mags or get the bigger rings let out line the fish are in 60ft water colum even if at 500ft water steelies like it to 50 ft salmon from 30 down to 60 the best trick is cannon ball and down rigger but you have to allow 10 to 15% bow in the line so add 5ft of line for the depth

When I mated for a couple weeks one year in Aug. out of Oak Orchard, copper stranded wire line was used with the normal sized dipsies along with riggers and mono lines with a pound or more of "monkey balls" off each corner of the transom (with a dodger/fly).  The monkey ball lead was attached to the line with rubber bands and would break off when a king would hit.  Not the most environmentally friendly way to fish but it worked.

If there were enough people on board, a planer board was also set out with some deeper diving plugs with inline weight hoping for a big steelie.

I don't know if junk fish are a big problem where you will be  on Lake O. but on Lake E. you have to check your dipseys frequently for "hitchhikers".

We've had some perch do that too.

Did well with the pencel release for lakers at the Niagera bar.
Ran 2oz. balls and hooked many.

Hey Guy's thanks for the help. Took the first trip to the big O this past weekend and had a blast 3 days of fishing boated 21 steelies, 2 coho and lost a few. No kings to be found even the charter boats were looking but no one showed up at the dock with one that I seen.

Ditto for us two weeks ago, all Steelhead and Coho. Not a king in three days.
