Nice Brownies.....
I've seen your picture now I don't have to ask every fisherman I see up there "Are you Terry ?"

Nice fish, I haven't been up there fishing for more than a decade but looking at those and remembering how it was has given me the fever again. Question, with the coloration of those I am assuming you are fishing a fair distance below the outflow. Don't the ones near the outflow still have more of a silvery coloration.

The colors vary yes, but being near the spillway or further below makes no difference as far as I am concerned.  I have caught just as many 'silvery' ones at the spillway, as I have deep dark color,  and just as many silvery ones well below the  dam as deep colored ones.  I was fishing at the handicap access earlier this spring and a guy asked me where the best spot to catch a nice trout was and i told him to go tuck himself up against the wall and cast out across the current.  10 minutes later he was carrying a brown over to me like he was carrying firewood.  It was very dark brown and belly very yellow.  I took a pic for him and then emailed it to him so he could release it.  I think the color has a lot to do with their genes.  Just my opinion.

Interesting. I fished it hardest (80-100 times a year) from the time they put in the coffer dam through the next 12-15 years but only sporadically since and I can only remember a handful of dark ones coming from above the old tresile bridge once the dam was finished. We always felt the color was from the highly oxygenated water. My best one came from doing just what you said and when I took it to the taxidermist he asked me if I wanted it mounted the way it was or the way he should look. That long snouted one your cradling is really impressive.

well i dont have any scientific reasoning for their coloration. I know their inside meat color is due to what they eat. High protein diets create the pinkness, but as far as what creates the colors and spots on the outside, I havent found any real reason or rhyme as to what causes it or if they are just born like that. I guess you could compare that to rainbows as well. You can catch one that has a deep, dark red stripe and the next one will be all silver with a faint pink strip that is barely noticeable. Would be interesting to know the real answer. I am going to be hanging out with the fish commission in a few, so I will be sure to ask that question.

Im telling you guys what they eat not only tells the color of the meat but also has an effect on there skin pigment and spot colors... Just look at a wild vs. stocked... Wilds are more brightly colored unlike stocked... Just look at what they eat natural food vs. fish meal... I still might be wrong but oh well just my 2 cents....

Fish in clear water are usually more colorful than fish in cloudy water. Since these fish live in the same water....the darker ones are nearer to the spawn than the lighter color ones?

It might have something to do with the spawn, but then again, I catch them all year long in dark colors and more silver... so I dont know. Its the mystery of the brown trout I guess.

Bings, how did you make out today?   I am going to be heading out shortly but I dont know if you will still be there.  I got this guy last night, and yesterday before work I flipped two 20+ inch browns out but never landed.  This is the guy I got last night.
