Fishing Myrtle Beach

in myrtle beach for the week and was looking at going out on a charter. personal charter is out of the question for financial reasons but i was looking at some of the party boat charters and they seem pretty reasonable. i was looking at the voyager party boat and thinking about going on the night trip to try and get some sharks. wondering if anyone has every fished on this boat or has had any luck on other party boats. im looking to get into some sharks. Thanks, David

Never cared for the head boats much, but they are ok for the price. Don't know if there would be any chance of "filling out" a charter or not, but you may want to check with the marinas. Good luck which ever way you go...

fished both piers without much luck just caught a bunch of small spots and a 22 inch flounder. i really want to catch some sharks. the people im here with dont wanna spend the money on the private charter so im stuck with a party boat. saw some guy catch about a 5 foot sand shark about 75 yards away from where everyone was swimming he caught it on cut squid. i might go to walmart or somewher tonight and get a surf rod and give it a try

There's a Bass Pro Shops down there that has a pretty good selection of rods too.

Just so you know, intentionally targeting sharks from the surf or piers in SC is illegal, from what I have been told.  I never really researched it myself but on several shark fishing msg boars, many guys from that area always complained about that law.  Just make sure you are fishing for "blues" or "cobia" or something else.

Bluefish are totally inedible. Get 5 pounds of bluefish fillets, squeeze them, you will have enough oil to change the oil in your truck. Junk fish for eating but fun to catch as they fight like heck. Keep your fingers away from their mouth.

What are you talking about Bismuth? How are Bluefish Inedible? I ate them everynight id catch them im still fine very good eating fish if you get the vein out of them. If they are a junk fish why would the pier evernight be shoulder to shoulder with people's coolers full of bluefish. Everybody was tellin me there good to eat and they werent lieing. Just my .02.

Fresh blues are excellent eating....unless you are someone who doesn't like your fish tasting like fish....and the oil is omega 3s....

I'll tell you when and how I found out bluefish are inedible. Back in 1978 six of us took a 2-day trip to the Chesapeake for bluefish. The first day we caught like 300 blues, all 5-12 pounds. Just an awesome day, fighting fish almost every minute of the trip. We kept about 60 of the smaller ones. On the way back into the dock we're filleting as fast as we could. We pull into the dock and there are 6 old black guys playing pinochle at a picnic table under a tree. We asked them if anyone wanted some fish, already cleaned. They all jumped up and said "yep, what kind?". We told them we had blues, all six said "NO THANKS" and went back to playing cards. One of our guys said, "We're in trouble". Boy was he right. We tried everything known to the culinary world to try to make them edible. Our best recipe involved marinading them in diesel fuel. I did find a good use for them though; they make wonderful bait for coon trapping. A piece of bluefish in a pocket results in an oil slick running clear to the Mississippi River. Draws in coons for miles around.

I fish all winter in Florida. I see a lot of people keep blues, and I always hear "they're not bad if you bleed them, cut out the blood vein, soak them in milk overnight, then cover them with Italian dressing, lemon slices, mint, orange slices, and parsley, then a triple coating of bread crumbs and bake them on a draining rack for 45 minutes at 500 degrees". On the other hand, I get a pompano, fillet it, a little salt and pepper and a couple dabs of butter, under the broiler for 4 minutes, and VOILA! Dinner!

Or get a bunch of whiting, bread 'em, fry for about 3 minutes, and VOILA!

No need for me to mess around with a greasy, toothy bluefish when I can get good tasty fish.

And another tip... where I stay in Florida is about 300 yards from a pier. I very rarely fish it, only when there is an east wind which blows in a lot of seaweed and trash. I surf-fish. When I do fish the pier, I do just as well as I do in the surf. I know all the regulars at the pier, guys who basically spend their life there. I ALWAYS put them to shame when I fish the pier. Just because a guy's skin looks like leather and he knows the name of every person on the pier does not mean he has any idea about how to fish. Every year, I watch one of the old-timers on the pier catch jack crevalle and mis-identify them as pompano. I quit telling him about which are which because he won't listen. But he's always one to tell me how he doesn't like pompano because they are so bony! This same guy begs me for every blue I get though. Says they're delicious when he does the above 30-step recipe.

The blue's I always catch are about 2-5 pounds nothing big. But the fillets were just perfect. The blues I caught were from the outer banks and everybody down there seemed to love along with the spanish mackeral. Spanish Mackeral were amazing.

I was down at the beach and the big rave was the spanish.  Same deal people shoulder to shoulder, so i had to join in.  I filled my cooler to the rim with them.  After cooking them about 3 different ways it was obvious these people never had perch.  I tossed a lot of fish out that night.
