6 hp rude

I picked it up cheap, tore it down, cleaned it up, pulled the rope and it started then quickly died. Long story short, i have to squeez the bulb repeatedly to keep it running.

1974
Runs as long as I pump fuel into it
Will not idle no matter what

Help a brother out

assuming the ball/line is not holding pressure since you have to keep pumping it to keep it running, it sure sounds like you got a leak/pinhole in/from one of the hoses. just sayin'

Salty dog: The fuel system works on a vacum principle. The bulb has a check valve. If there is a pin hole leak, the vacum is broken and the fuel stops flowing. The intake hose or fuel tank fitting could also break the vacum. Change the hoses and bulb abd I would bet the problem is solved. IMO

I had the same problem with a newer merc. Changed the bulb and fuel line, runs like a bear.

Not the fuel lines, just got done changing all of them. Oh well, try the least expensive thing first. Right.

I just priced the fuel pump, almost as expensive as the whole motor.

Will report back after I wrench on it some more.

could be wrong but he MAY have meant that if the vent on the gas cap is closed that the motor will not run. just sayin'

Did you price the whole fuel pump or is there a rebuild kit available for it...usually just a diaphragm and a few check valves to replace.

Also might need carb. inlet needle and seat if it has been sitting for a long time...maybe a "shock" treatment of seafoam might "help" but not cure/fix it...

I've seen those JohnnyRude fuel connectors get hairline cracks in them and suck air, too.

    Hope this helps...

Do you see gas around the tank gauge?
If so a gasket may need replaced on the tank.
Just another thing to look at.

I put in a whole new pump, but I plan on rebuilding the old one so I have a spare. Runs like a fine swiss time piece.
